He was playing the game for the first time back then. If he tried it now, he would probably find it much easier.

DW made the 1399 start for BYZ a lot harder; the Ottomans have a bigger army, and they have an unassailably large navy compared to you, so it's not possible to trap them on one side of the Bosporus while you nom their Balkan territories any more. If the Timurids really go for them, then you're set, but otherwise it's really difficult unless you're lucky enough that a war with Castille or France gets their fleet destroyed but ends with a white peace. In 1405 or so, it's piss easy, since they're in the middle of a civil war and you have a larger navy as well.

That's because I was incompetent and posting the AAR for lulz. After I got my graphics card fixed, I started a new Byzantine game in 1405 at the same difficulty setting. When I finally got bored and gave up, it was 1750 and I controlled everything between Provence and the Philippines.

So not the ERE then. At this point I'm thinking Bohemia. Does that sound good?

Only if you complete the union chain of Bohemia->Germany->Persia->Mughal Empire. I'm afraid there can be no compromises on this- it is your destiny.

I'll ask what, if any, country to attack first, and if it turns out the votes lean towards that chain, then that's what we'll do. Good luck with that though.
