Shroom Man 777 wrote:Even so, even if a mentally healthy person killed himself, how is his death a "good thing" worthy of celebrating or some other shit? How is it a "win" situation, as shithead wautd described? That the fact that a ridiculous notion filled a person's head, be it crucification or homeopathy or alcoholism, and resulted in a preventable loss of life, and wautd apparently thinks this is something to be glad about? Fuck that shit.

Plus, making an analogy with some rapist who ended up suiciding, as if that has anything to do with the matter at all, just shows that wautd is a complete shithead. Maybe using that kind of shit logic, I can say that people who genuinely suffer from mental illness and brain chemical imbalance and mood disorder ending up killing themselves is good because, uh, Hitler also killed himself and he was a mass murdering fuck so, in wautd's own shit words "He must have been mentally ill to be a serial rapist genocidal leader of Nazi Germany, so do you shed a tear for him as well? I say good riddance, it'll be the last time he makes any more victims. If you think that makes me a terrible person than so be it."

As if the South Korean taxi driver actually victimized anyone aside from his own poor self. As if that nonsense tangent has anything to do with suicide at all. Bringing in a serial rapist, or a serial Jew-gasser, has nothing to do with suicide in itself, or this South Korean dead person, and is just a shitty argument on part of a shithead internet tough guy poser acting tough so people will think he's so hard shit, like a dried up dogturd rather than some soft wet diarrheatic piece of shit. What a shithead. What a fucking fatty. You know how after eating lots of greasy meat, your shit ends up all oily and really smelly? That's the subspecies of fatty shithead he belongs to, taxonomically speaking, on the Bristool stool exam chart of fat shitheads. Maybe he should eat more fiber if he wants to be hard.
Well, it won't be the first time someone on this board indulged in the "lol stupid fundie etc. etc. etc. good riddance" tripe really. Somehow on this board, some things are talked about with such callousness that well, anything goes apparently.

I can understand why many atheists, such as myself, do not wish to be associated with views expressed by those more at home at the toilet bowl, where they can float around and clog the drains at their leisure.

mr friendly guy wrote:Ok I am going to bite. Since the article doesn't mention he was mentally ill, where do all these people come up with this claim?

The fact someone has a delusion called religion isn't the same "delusion" as used by psychiatrist, ergo religious people just by being religious aren't mentally ill.

The fact that he does things which are idiotic doesn't mean he is mentally ill.

[snip relevant antecedents]

It seems the spat between Spiro, Shroom and Wautd is dependent on the premise that he is mentally ill. One can argue that he deserved sympathy even if he wasn't... however that isn't the argument presented. Thus its pointless proceeding in this vein unless one side changes or provides evidence, you know like a psychiatrist's diagnosis.
It's the odd cases like this where I'd love to know what the man was going through prior to his death. The sheer level of preparation and effort he put in raises some significant questions, especially as the article mentions that his faith was probably a source of strength for him in the past. While I don't doubt its lack of popularity here, religion is helpful for many people in times of mental stress. It's extremely worrying that what was apparently a positive influence shifted so brutally.

I come from a cognitive psychology background, so I'll admit to some bias against a purely psychiatric opinion. I know you're medical, do you have any psyciatric experience? Could be worse though, at least the MDs have facts. It could be... (gasp!)... psychodynamic!
Seriously though, anyone trying to diagnose from this article alone is completely bullshitting.

I'm sorry, but you appear to be lost. What post were you trying to respond to?

I haven't done psychiatry since internship year (our system is more closer align to the British, rather than American system). In any event I agree with you - we need more information before we jump up and down declaring him mentally ill. If I describe someone using a medical term, like microcephalic, sociopath etc, I am using it as a perjorative like most people who use those terms on this board, rather than an internet diagnosis.

OK, so a man who puts a crown of thorns on his head, hammers nails through his hands and completely re-enacts the crucifixion of Jesus, is sound of mind, is he? I would say it's more than 50/50 he was suffering from a mental illnesss, or was extremely depressed. Obviously, I can't make a diagnosis on a forum after reading an article, and I'm not a psychiatrist, but I can make a bloody good guess.

Regrdless, the fact is some wanker actually posted his appeasement that a man had died an agonising death, and that kind of horrific hate-spewing needs to be railed against.

And Shroomy will tell you every Easter his countrymen try to crucify themselves to show their devotion to their magic man living in the sky. A south Korean farmer stabbed himself (and later died) to protest IIRC against trade liberalisation with US beef imports. Buddhist monks set themselves aflamed to protest American actions in Indo China. Suicide bombers blow themselves up to achieve dubious strategic gains. Just look at the news and you see people do crazy shit which is irrational.

Of sound mind is a loaded term. If you mean is he rational, then he is not like numerous fundies. If you mean does he have a mental illness, then I need a psychiatrist diagnosis before I say yea or nay. Sorry, but one of my dislikes is when people throw out the mental illness card based on someone doing something irrational (like most humans). It just cheapens things for when people actually do have a real mental illness.

But back to people who commit suicide. If they have a mental illness, then yes he needs to be restrained and treated for a psychiatric illness because it is the disease talking so to speak. If they are under intense pressure, like bullying for example then I feel sympathy. If they are suffering from some illness and want to end their suffering I understand.

If none of those apply and he is just one of the myriad people who do crazy actions, then I don't have to help him commit suicide, but like patients who discharge themselves against medical advice, I don't have the right to stop him. With that in mind I feel sympathy for the dead person's friends and family, but I don't feel particularly sympathetic to the deceased, since they apparently choose to do so. I won't gloat, but I freely admit to laughing at the Darwin awards and find fgalkin statement humourous for the tragic irony value.

Oh, and in response to fingolfin's statement, I thought it appropriate to bring up memory lane.

Last time I remember when some idiot killed themselves and some people said "I can't feel too much sympathy." This was followed by people whining about how the former are arseholes or something. Then came our emperor to bitch slap them down.

I've seen many people here rant about how only an asshole would say this or that, but what exactly is the ethical argument being made? That it's intrinsically harmful to say that you think the world is better off without someone in it, no matter who that person is?
