If you want to make HW2 a bit slower paced and more detailed etc, try some of the mods. Complex is excellent though rather overwhelming until you get the hang of it.
TFS is not bad, as is the Fleet Commander (BSG) mod. And Warlords is outstanding. It features ships right from the OT up to the NJO series, and there is a second version for the Clone Wars. It's good.

Try the first one, it's better. Anyway, if you like Sins (of all things) and dislike Homeworld, your only option is to start looking at games the most of us think are horrible drivel.

I don't know. Warlords to me seemed like an effort not to make a good, playable mod, but a mission to cram as many Star Wars ships in as possible. It just felt jumbled and pointless. I haven't played it in years though; has it changed much?

Hmmm.....there are still a lot of ships, perhaps too many, ESPECIALLY in the fighters and corvettes section.
But in terms of playability, it is indeed still good.

Warlords is both an adventure in meaningless trivia (3 thousand ships that all look retarded and have fuck-all tactical niche, thanks EU) and loos fucking stupid in battle (when it isn't crushing the poor HW2 engine).
Actually, get HW1, then find the Macross mod. Lots of fun, slow-paced, combat actually looks interesting unlike Sins.
Hey Cov, did you know the mental giants at Ironclad finally had the pirate waves be proportional to the bounty offered? No shit, they only just worked this out. You can't spawn 5000 ships to kill your enemy for 250 bucks anymore! AMAZING.

Wait, what? They weren't proportional? When did they fix that?

Very recently, like the last patch. Before that, each pirate wave had a size (I'm pretty sure the waves increased each time, linearly), but they had no relation to the actual bounty on offer. So you have the retarded event where the pirates (who control the most heavily fortified location in space) would send a giant 200-pop fleet to attack a guy for $200; enough money to buy half of one of their worst ships.
Apparently now the pirates have more options with regard to what fleet composition they will have, so you can't send heavy cruisers against a guy who just started.
