I have no idea of the exact energy, but CME's can be massive. Getting hit by a wall of plasma massing more than Earth will be sure to ruin your day.

Centurion: "Sir, I really think you should look at the other Battlestar."
Baltar: "What are you babbling about other...it's impossible!"
Centurion: "No. It is a Battlestar."

Let's say that we are talking about a Sol-type star. Your ship is orbiting at 1 AU from the sun. Then, a CME ten time the mass of Earth goes straight in your direction.

Question :

Will it spread enough that by the time it reach you its density is inferior to that of our atmosphere at sea-level ?

EDIT :

On the other hand, even at sea-level-atmosphere density, a wall of plasma going at near relativistic speed (<0.01 C) is sure to ruin your day if only because of the sheer kinetic energy carried by the thing.

I don't have the knowledge to answer that question properly, but a gut-feeling answer would be: it might be considerably less than 1 atmosphere. But as you said, that will still be enough to fuck you up massively.

On a related note, I recalled finally why the "compress brown dwarves to mini-stars" idea was so familiar to me; the Monoliths do it to Jupiter in 2010: Odyssey Two.
