Perhaps the habit of M/AM powerplants detonating at the drop of a hat are a good reason why you wouldn't want these things around planetside

You just don't need that kind of energy density anywhere else, it's a size constraint, which immobile starbases and such do not suffer from and such can have large fusion reactors instead.
