Re: The exorbitant cost of being a Star Trek fan
I see the numbers, but my mind refuses to accept it. That's it, I refuse to buy any ST dvds. Wait, I already have First Contact. Well, then I'll only get the movies that didn't suck: II, III (otherwise known as IIa), IV, and VIDarth Wong wrote: 40 x $18 = $720 (TOS)
7 x $119 = $833 (TNG)
7 x $98 = $686 (DS9)
7 x $100 = $700 (Voyager)
10 x $25 = $250 (movies)
Or a total of more than three thousand dollars US.

I wouldn't be too hard on Paramout. They took a beating from nemesis and have to mke their money some how. Nenemsis will have all the cut scenes on the disc along with the comintaries.
You want to call a DVD overrated: Farscape was the worse thing on TV next to Voyager, I'm glad that crap got canned after 4 years and the DVD's are the same format as TOS from Paramout. John and Arron Sung (sp)? died at the end of the series ooo your right Star Trek is bad.
I hate to tell you fanatic fans the obvious but you are part of the Trek fan base when you watch the series to build website to bash it, Most of you watch the show so closely for screw-ups "you can't see the forest for the tree's" as it were. If you guys would stop trying to look for reasons to hate it, you might start to like it.
Ive seen Star Wars fans Quote Kirk or any other part of any givin show from all 5 series better than most Star Trek fans and the ones quoting claim to hate Trek with a pasion but race home to take notes on the latest ep. to bash it with thier friends.

I will be surprised if it does. In Ronald B. Moore's little essay on what is wrong with Star Trek that he wrote a few years back, he mentioned that Berman once said something to the effect of that there will never be a "special edition" of a any ST movie he makes because what is on the screen is it.Batman002 wrote:I wouldn't be too hard on Paramout. The official Star Trek website has revealed the content of the seven deleted scenes that will be included on the May 20th release of Star Trek: Nemesis on DVD. These include Data and Picard discussing Riker and Troi's wedding, an alternate introduction to Shinzon, Worf and Picard discussing defensive preparations, Troi and Picard talking about Shinzon's motivations, Shinzon's second "mental rape" of Troi, a scene in Sickbay between Picard and Crusher and, finally, the film's original ending. There's no word on whether these will be anamorphic widescreen, but we can always hope. Visit the official site at the link above for more detailed descriptions of each scene.

That's true, The DVD's out right now say either Director's edition or Collector's Edition. Berman and Braga feel the best part of the movie is what was seen on the screen, they nearly feel like people don't want to see extra's on a DVD. I for one am one who loves to see them, even if they should have been removed because they sucked or not. The same way the extras blew in AOTC.

In truth, I seriously doubt that very many Trekkies are completists. Few have that much disposable income. I was a SW completist for a while, and it made my life miserable, so I try to keep my collecting in check. If I start paying good money for crappy products, it's time to calm down. I will probably try to get any further TOS episodes that I buy on DVD, as the resolution is considerably better (TOS was produced completely in film, since it was made back in the '60's). I may buy a few eps at some point in the future.
I'm trying to collect some of the better non-official technical books (Ships of the Star Fleet vols 1 & 2 are particularly excellent). This is quite a challenge since most of them are out of print, and never had big print runs in the first place, so there's little danger of me overspending.

Did it ever occur to you that maybe we once DID like it, before it got turned to shit? I'm a big TOS fan, and each successive spin-off has piled more shit upon what was once a creative and compelling sci-fi show. I don't understand what kind of psychological complex can drive someone to say that if someone bashes something, he must secretly love it.Batman002 wrote:I hate to tell you fanatic fans the obvious but you are part of the Trek fan base when you watch the series to build website to bash it, Most of you watch the show so closely for screw-ups "you can't see the forest for the tree's" as it were. I haven't watched any of Enterprise, nor did I watch most of Voyager. I watched about half of the episodes of DS9. I would bet that those features came more because of studio pressure to boost sales of the DVD as opposed to Berman deciding he wanted people to see those scenes.Spanky The Dolphin wrote:Ahem...Sabastian Tombs wrote:I will be surprised if it does. And Ron Moore's not wrong yet; this isn't a "special edition" DVD, this is just "DVD with a few goodies", as a lot of non-SE DVDs have. I'd be willing to bet cash Berman will veto any "special edition" DVD that alters the actual movie itself.

I have hunted around Moore's famous little essay about what is wrong with Trek and found the quote about Berman. It ties right back into the topic of this tread.
Now this was written back in 2000. After that, Paramount has started to release the movies with extras. As an interesting side note, Moore predicted that the next ST movie after Insurrection would bomb because Berman/ThePowersThatBe wasn't willing to try anything new with the franchise.Moore also wonders why Paramount doesn’t make better use of its TREK collection of movies. He says, "I’ve never quite understood why they don’t exploit their library of STAR TREK better. They have yet to release any of the movies with commentary tracks, or deleted footage, or behind the scenes stuff like everybody else is. You would think they would be on a big project, licking their chops, and going, ‘Look at all this stuff we have in the archives.’ On STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE alone there’s God knows how many hours of footage that was never seen by the public. Robert Wise is still alive, and he should do a commentary track on the film. Right now DVD is still a niche market that’s going to break out, but it’s going to break out. You have one of the richest franchises in history; you’ve got this fanatical following that will buy almost anything and loves the behind the scenes stuff. Put out GENERATIONS on laser disc and don’t even show the sequences that we cut? Put them on. People want to see them. I’m not saying, re-cut the film. Just stick it at the end. You let the audience watch the deleted scenes, and yeah they’ll probably go, ‘I see why they cut them, but it was interesting. It was kind of fun to watch that. I would pay extra to see that. It’s just kind of basic business sense."
Rick Berman has said repeatedly that the audience should not see the cut scenes from his movies. Explains Moore, "On something like that, it’s pretty much his say, because he was the producer of those movies. If he doesn’t want to go there, they are not going to shove that down his throat. But as far as the older movies, we are [still] really close to the 20th anniversary of THE MOTION PICTURE. They could have done something. You don’t have to re-release it in theaters. Why couldn’t you issue a collector’s DVD edition of THE MOTION PICTURE with tons of other doodads and charge people for it? They’d lap it up; people would just grab it. Wise could talk about it. I’m sure Nimoy would be happy to talk about the films he directed, and Shatner, God knows, loves to talk."

I was able to visit the "Star Trek Experience" at the Las Vegas Hilton last week. I was almost tempted to buy the first season of DS9..... until I looked at the price. $195 dollars.... same for all the TNG seasons. The individual movies on DVD were all 35-45 dollars.
Apparently they think they can charge 100 bucks more then everywhere else just because they are in a gift shop..... LAME.
