Gah... Next time, I'm buying an IBM...
Yes, get an IBM laptop. IBM makes very good laptops. Even the used ones are pretty nice.
At a computer trade show around the area they were showing some old T23s (IIRC) and they looked great (though the nibs were a bit worn). IBM also has an eBay store with refurb'ed and older laptops as well if you don't need a brand-new T40 or something.
I'm quite happy with my positively ancient Thinkpad 600. Mind you I upgraded the CPU to a PII 300 MHz and maxed out the RAM, but, it's still cool.

as far as laptops go, I have to give the nods to just 4 makes in the consumer PC laptop category (I dont do macs, so cant say about them):

IBM
Toshiba
Dell
Gateway
Dell and Gateway are unreliable with regard to laptops.

as far as laptop's go, the only one i have used with any regularity is melissa's iBook, and it is a piece of translucent crap. the modem is crap, it's slow as fuck and overpriced. i for one would like to give the fuckwads at the URI bookstore a piece of my mind for selling her that piece of garbage, but she won't let me.....afraid i'll start a fight.

Which iBook did she get? The old toilet-seat one?

If it's one of the newer white ones, how much RAM does she have? OS X is a memory hog.

128MB is not enough for OS X. She should have at least 256MB for OS X to run smoothly. Also, what version does she have? 10.2 runs somewhat better than 10.0 or 10.1 did.

10.1.... yeah, they really took advantage of her. either that or they themselves were ignorant. so how much will a pair of 256mb chips for an iBook set me back?

interesting... that hasnt been my experience. it might be an issue with certain models, but of those that Ive used -- the 4100 and 8100 Dells -- they seem to be pretty good.

With most models I've seen at universities, Dell laptops tend to be unreliable. This is also the experience I've seen from various webboards (e.g. ArsTechnica).

Laptops for professionals (e.g. IBM Thinkpads, Compaq EVOs) tend to be much more robust.

I brought a dell instead of a mac laptop because my budget burned to the ground and I couldn't afford anything better. Dell overall is ok...i'm saying this conservatively because it does break down but not as much as my compaq. Now my NEC that was a piece of art. After I got a new computer a year ago (before my laptop) I took a hammer to the inside of my NEC for fun. Please before you burn me for breaking a computer it was not working well at all and has slowed down pretty much to a point where games could not be runned. And it still worked after a few blows to motherboard...so there you have it NEC is pretty good but in the face of true competition Apple nothing compares. (Yes I am spilling Apple propaganda here...:):):)

There are a lot of Mac fans here on SD, but we don't need rampant cheerleading!

That said, Apple makes excellent laptops, but many people run Windows and the cost of moving to Mac (e.g. purchasing Office, etc.) is a bit much. Since they're looking for x86-based laptops, I've reccomended IBM Thinkpads.

Now, a 17" PowerBook would be nice here :D
