I'm unsurprised that the funds are being misappropriated. My own experiences with the Japanese government have taught me to expect polite, expedient and courteous mass inefficiency. The government added so many freaking bits of red tape to the recovery effort and demanded that every minuscule decision get made from the top down. Its a fucking nightmare for groups trying to get funds for reconstruction. Something like 55% of all the money donated to Japan hasn't reached the people who need it. That it's going to something this morally questionable is just icing on the cake.
DarkArk wrote:I'd just like to add that eating whale was not something the Japanese traditionally did. It was looked down upon until WWII and the occupation when it was some of the only meat they could get, and then they acquired a taste for it. So really the whole: "this is a vital part of our national culture and diet" is a load of crock.
It wouldn't have been. The Japanese food distribution system was still basically feudal till the early 20th century so there wasn't an effective way of preserving whale meat long enough to get it from the parts of Japan where whaling was done to the parts of Japan where it was not done. Japan was only a step away from the wild west up till the 1920's and 1930's. Foods only become "cultural" after the distribution of it is viable.

And they distribute the crap out of it. Even considering that it is so stigmatized internationally and even unpopular nationally it's not spectacularly hard to find. There is a large farmers market / meat wholesaler about a block away from where I live in Nogata that has it as well as a couple of grocers. And Nogata isn't a place typically known for its exotic cultural flair.

And for all the various explanations that the Japanese people and Japanese government give for why they continue whaling the simplest answer to me seems to be that Whale tastes good. And it does, it tastes freaking delicious when its cooked properly. And considering that the price of whale meat isn't substantially different than that for beef, admittedly due to subsidies, I entirely understand why people buy it. But tasting good is an insufficient justification for continuing a practice that is as outdated as whaling.

Well golly gee, I don't think I ever disagreed with that sentiment.

Thank god Greenpeace is such an unassailable bastion of order and reason.

Oh, wait, they're a bunch of lunatics who make the rest of us look bad. Fuck them.
How about you fuck yourself.
How about no?

How does that fly as a reason to keep whaling? If it tasted good enough that people actually wanted to eat it, then it wouldn't need to be subsidised in order to sell, and if it were just going to be sold in small amounts as a delicacy then the fleet and take wouldn't need to be anywhere near the size they are.
What organism other than whales do we regularly kill that has that degree of cognitive development?
Gorillas and some of the other great apes. Which is also frowned upon.

It doesn't. Thus the "insufficient justification for continuing a practice that is as outdated as whaling" part of what I said.

Actually its mainly Sea Shepherd that has been more high profile and physically entangled with the Japanese whalers. Greenpeace just destroys GM crops and set back Australia's research into GM wheat by about a year. Fuckers. But if the Japanese do arrest morons from Greenpeace and fail to touch Sea Shepherd I will join you in laughing. :D Unless you meant Sea Shepherd and couldn't tell them apart from Greenpeace.

Nope. The founder used to be one of the directors for Greenpeace, but got kicked out in the 70's. He is pretty critical of them now.

Yeah, Sea Shepherd and Greenpeace love each other like America loves Iran. :D

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_shepherd
Greenpeace is also critical of the group on its website and state: "By making it easy to paint anti-whaling forces as dangerous, piratical terrorists, Sea Shepherd could undermine the forces within Japan which could actually bring whaling to an end".[34] Both groups protest the Japanese whale hunts in the Southern Ocean but Greenpeace has a policy to not assist Sea Shepherd in finding the whalers.
Personally I have donated to Sea Shepherd, but will never donate to Greenpeace unless they change their anti nuclear, anti GM food stance. Sea Shephard hang outs around the Fremantle markets so I give them a bit of loose change. Oops, apparently I am funding a terrorist organisation, at least according to Japan. Oh well, screw the Japanese whaling industry.

Hi there, welcome to several posts ago.
"The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles."
