Just for the record, what Darth Tedious was getting at was that Death Star explained the Praxis effect as the realspace shadow of a ripple in hyperspace from the sheer 1e38 J violence of the planet going off, which in turn was due to the superlaser being fully charged when fired. Dunno 'bout all the wormhole stuff.

I'd say an exotic "hypermatter" reactor with power output that's on a stellar scale can blow up however it wants, and we can't really say anything about how it should or should not look. Just to do what it does, the damn reactor would operate based on physical principles that we don't even understand.
Like StarSword said, assuming the insane mass equivalence of its fuel is somehow stored or "lightened" through some application of the same principles that allow hyperdrives to work, the ring could be a less-than-C visual effect similar to how see ships zooming off into the distance, even though they've already accelerated off to a velocity of several million C.
So generally the ring from Alderaan's destruction is a bigger problem..

If the superlaser can cook off resulting in that stupid planar ring due to working on physics we don't understand, why the hell can't Alderaan which is protected by...shields the workings of we don't understand?

It might be negated by the inverse square law. Might be something worth working out, actually. Do we know how far endor was from the death star when it exploded?
