I wish I could say I was amazed to hear of a man, an elected official partaking in this debate no less, thinking a rape kit is something that magically makes pregnancy go away without an abortion. As opposed to, say, a kit for gathering evidence to identify the rapist. But I'm not. This is sadly typical of government in many parts of the country.
That's so much worse.

There's enough bullshit going on from this case that dredging up stuff from a year ago and implying that it is part of what's happening right now is just weakening all of the bad things currently going on.
I mean, yes, it's related, especially with Republicans calling Davis a "terrorist" for daring to filibuster, but let's keep our end honest at least?

To Sen. Wendy Davis and her supporters both in the "house" and those looking on in support; this just was amazing. I heard about this yesterday and have been devouring everything I could on it to both understand the process and just sit in awe with a few tears of joy in what was accomplished.
It is kinda like the DOMA and Prop 8 deal in that, it may not be a landslide event, or a major force of change, but dammit, it is a positive step forward for humanity and I relish that.

I'm sure she wore comfortable shoes instead of heels for the occasion as well. If she had stooped for a moment to tie her shoe, should that have ended the filibuster?Terralthra wrote:In fairness, Davis doesn't need a back brace, generally. I wonder if her example will be enough to end the bullshit absentee Rapeblican "filibusters" in Washington. If they had to stand for 12 hours instead of relaxing on couch drinking with lobbyists speaking about on topic matters instead of phone book government efficiency would jump up several orders of magnitude.
Re: Lots of Drama in Texas Tonight (SB5)
Irbis, there've been several relatively public discussions of "filibuster reform" and what you're talking about is called the "nuclear option". The president of the senate has to simply get a majority vote to change the rules. I think it can be done any time, but I'm sure it can be done at the opening of a new congress.
Also, for the record, absentee filibuster is not a Republican only thing, the Democrats made use of them as well, the existence of the Blue Dogs just made it harder to ensure you had enough votes to prevent a cloture motion.

Historically, the Civil Rights Act filibuster was an amazing feat, and I wouldn't put it past the Tea Party to be able to pull that kind of thing off by working in shifts. Zealotry does that.

Flagg, you're right, I was confusing two different proposals on filibuster reform. "Nuclear Option" is actually older than anonymous legislative holds, from Trent Lott. The "Fix" to the Filibuster is easy.
You simply make it so if you threaten to Filibuster, you HAVE to actually stnad up and DO the Filibuster.
90% of the time when you hear about a bill or nomination being Filibustered what is actually happening is one side 'threatening' to use it, and the other gives and capitulates.
And these days the threat itself is almost always a bluff. Of the few times someone has said "Well go ahead, Filibuster, stand up for 10 hours to keep us from voting" the other side has almost always backed down.

The Conservatives are playing the long game too - ever heard of the Quiverfull movement? Really, if they keep trying again and again, it's only a matter of when, not if, they succeed.
Life sucks and is probably meaningless, but that doesn't mean there's no reason to be good.

IndrickBoreale93, could you please define precisely what "it" the "Conservatives" are trying?

I think his reference to the "quiverfull" movement is to the notion they might be able to outbreed the opposition.

It's not that I don't understand him, or at least think I understand him.
It's that I'd like to see himself actually sit down at a keyboard and lay out his own reasoning, motivation, and opinions clearly. Instead of just blurting out two sentences of alarmism like he used to do.
Young Indrick here needs to grow intellectually, and I think it'd be good for him to engage in intellectual exercises like "define your terms" and "analyze your own fears to see if they make sense."

No, Indrick Boreale was a character from the Dawn of War series. He's, erm, famous in the fandom for being a howling idiot.

You are all correct.Dr. Trainwreck wrote:No, Indrick Boreale was a character from the Dawn of War series. He's, erm, famous in the fandom for being a howling idiot.
One, his screenname is SpaceMarine93.
Two, his avatar is a particular Space Marine. To wit, Indrick Boreale, who as Dr. Trainwreck says, is famous for being a babbling idiot who makes terrible decisions. Lots of terrible decisions. And a somewhat goofy pronunciation of important words that makes him sound like he's got a speech impediment.
Three, if you're familiar with SM93's posting history, sometimes he's OK, but he is seemingly compelled to, at regular intervals, freak out and start posting badly thought out, borderline paranoid comments about how THEY ARE OUT TO GET US CAN ANYONE SAVE HUMANITY or some shit like that.
When he starts doing this, I start calling him IndrickBoreale93, because he is diving into the depths of babbling idiocy.
