Couldn't watch it due to Greece, but from what I read the victory for the US was indeed well deserved.

I'm not a huge soccer fan, so does anybody here care to guess who will come out on top in Japan vs England?

For what it's worth 538 gives it 61-39 in favor of Japan, which I think is pretty close to true. England has done better than expected but Japan is still too good.
As it was the game last night was entertaining to watch, and the Americans did play better than Germany (much to my surprise) although not to the same degree they outplayed China. When you hold a team which was averaging ten shots on goal to just one, you know you're doing something right. It was pretty rough and tumble out there though; Rapino was getting mugged left and right, and when Popp came down with that bloody head...
And go figure Germany missing a PK in literally forever. The Americans kinda lucked out on their PK considering the replay showed it taking place just outside the box, but they still would've won even if you take that way.

Personally kind of annoyed it was pretty much decided in the first half since I was still trying to make my way from work to a bar, but good to be with friends none the less to watch the ending.

Apparently the phrase "play like a girl" has been redefined to mean "score three goals in the first fifteen minutes"...
(From a retweeted comment I came across earlier.)

America. Whether they as a nation care or not, I don't know.
All I do know is that as a Canadian/American citizen with German/English/Norwegian ancestry, I was able to change my cheering allegiance at a moment's notice and not feel an ounce of sorrow.

I saw the highlights of the final. Can't argue with the result, USA were superior in every department. Special mention has to go to wee Carly Lloyd, it's rare enough to score a hat trick in a final much less have the 3rd a Beckham-like beauty from the half way line.

The Women's Team are going to be celebrities for about... two days and then everybody is gonna be like 'soccer? that's the sport with the round ball that you kick, right?". Fucking Yanks. Oh, I'm sure the team will appear for a photo op with the President and all, but still.
Been a fair amount of nasty celebrating along the lines of 'biggest blow to Japan since Hiroshima' and what not, too, from the sounds of it. At least the few people who have commented about it on my FB feed have been genteel enough about it... no 'America Fuck Yeah' or whatever.

A bit much on the cynicism. It may never even happen that women's sports come anywhere close to men's in terms of popularity, much less approach the rarified heights of the football-basketball-baseball troika, and now that they're not playing anymore of course coverage is going to shift to the next shiny object. But you don't have the USWNT again break the record for most-watched soccer game and expect it to go back to the 90s of "isn't that the sport moms make their kids play 'cause football is scary?" America loves winners, especially when they score goals from halfway across the field (god that was a beautiful shot). All we need know is for the men to start winning.
