Up. Build tall, tall like a lighthouse ... on an island ... away from people ... Yep, that's my preferred option 
My preference for building is making much better use of the land space so 'up'. My preference for living is rural, but not 'out' like suburbia. I hate suburbia (or at least the evil Australian version thereof).
