It actually happened twice. Two different A-10's each shot down an Iraqi helicopter with the gun. The only gun kills during the war.Macross wrote:I dont know if you would count this as a dogfight, but an A-10 did face off and shoot down an Iraqi helicopter in the first Gulf War.Montcalm wrote:Would an A-10 succeed in a dogfight

That is easier said than done, for long range look down shots your going to be using radar guided missiles rather than heat seekers, and the Hog flys so low that getting a good lock and homing signal without ground clutter and returns fouling your shot is going to be very hard. This is one of the reasons Hogs often stay below 1,000 feet, in the open sky thoes wings and body creat a massive radar cross section and their lack of speed makes them easy pickings for air-superiority fighters. Down low they can get lost in the ground clutter.Vympel wrote:In reality, an air superiority fighter wouldn't bother getting into a dogfight with a Warthog- it'd maintain superior altitude, lock on with it's look-down-shoot-down radar, and snap off a missile. Or two.
Also, I don't know if the Thud II has the capability to aim it's 30mm at fast moving air targets efficiently- anyone know?
As for air-to-air sights for the 30mm , Im not certain.
