Most swords you can buy online would to be honest, take one hit on the blade and shatter like a piece of glass...Stainless steel blades are baaaaaad! as are movie pieces

Well, I've got a 32" longsword, nothing fancy, but I like it. Only other thing I'd want is a shorter sword for my other hand, maybe 24".

IIRC, that's as much for safety reasons as anything else (no director wants to risk his stars with anything so dangerous as live steel blades).

I seem to remember an episode of Conquest that had to do with fencing, where the demo crew used real, authentic swords.

How about a light saber?

I'd want a true longsword, what most people now call two-handed swords. There's a few schools in America that teach medieval swordfighting with them, and I know the five stances. It's actually a stabbing weapon (not slashing), and it's hard to deflect because of its size.

Or a slightly shorter sword. Length and balance are similar to a baseball bat. Don't remember the name, but I've handled one and it was very nice. My ex-girlfriend collects swords and daggers, though I know how to use them better than she does.

Contrary to popular belief, steel swords aren't very cumbersome at all. Actors are often instructed to swing their swords to make them look heavier than they actually are. A typical medieval one-handed sword weighed around a kilo, and the largest twohanders (up towards 200cm long) seldom more than 4½.
Oh, and the term "broadsword" is from around the 16th century and refers to "normal" swords as opposed to the thin rapiers. "Broadsword" is not a specific sword type as such.

Since I am a member of the Society For Creative Anachronisms (www.sca.org), I have seen many a find dagger and sword, and I know many swordsmiths and weapons merchants. Unfortunately, my swords were left with my despicable ex-hubbie. Why? Because he chased me out of the house with on and I never went back to get them.

But I digress... Men were often amazed when she pulled it out of the bodice, because there was nothing sewn in the dress to hold it in place except for ... umm... well... (Which is how I finally stopped my ex-hubbie, by drawing the dirk, flinging the sheath at him as I reversed my grip, and then waited for him to swing at me. But, anyways... Swords. One that I wished Museum Replicas still had was called the 'Elf Sword'. It was seemingly based off a comic called "ElfQuest" by WaRP Graphics, where the hero's sword was a sharply curved crescent 'moon', with cutting edges on both sides. Very wicked little sword.

I could go on... and on... and on... Especially about how beautiful a Damascus steel sword is, and how I've seen several swords forged 'on site' at an event displayed for buyers to admire. I've even seen a merchant take one of his swords, hold it by the hilt approx. 2ft above a sheet of 16g steel, and when dropped the sword impaled the ground under the steel without harming or dulling the blade. Swweeeet sword! Great balance iirc.

Wow...that's so awesome... with the blade made of ultrasharp unbreakable... transparent plastic? But then again, the choice of material could make it very useful for... uhm... holding it up in front of your eyes and still see what your enemy is up to! A stroke of genius. Really.

The little decorative holes in the blade also looks great for fucking up the balance and the grip doesnt look very comfortable.

First of all, all blades on that site that aren't a dark color look transparent. Second of all, its just nifty looking... but i suppose you would only by a sword for its ballance and kill capabillity in this day and age anyways

Well, no. But I would buy a sword that actually looked like a sword. And then theres beauty in functionality.

If I want a ninjatoy, I go to the toy store. Much more reasonable prices. Come to think of it, my little brother has a sword that looks a bit like that he never plays with anymore since he got sucked into Starcraft. Except his has got little blinking lights as well. Well, Katanas are overrated anyway.

I prefer double edged swords. I am practicing atm with a Greatsword (185cm, 3,8kg) and from time to time with 2 Short swords (Dual wielding is hell to learn).

And yes, Stainless Steel is crap. Get a Carbon Steel, if you buy over Internet. Far better, go to a Weaponsmith near you and let him make one for you (I am lucky enough to have a great smith just 30 min away)

AFAIK the LoTR blades were all made to be useable in a practical sense, with correct balance, weight and shape.

You actually can buy prop-replicas of them, and they're pretty reasonably priced from what I can tell. Under $100, in most cases.

My fiance's dad (they are Japanese) has a good friend (he is a good friend on mine too) who happens to be a monk in Nagano. When we go to visit him, we always exchange gifts and this monk (his name is Hide) is a very generous man. Two years ago, he gave me a katana which now hangs next to my book case.
