Shogo MAD was the most original FPS that nobody ever remembers, because although it was one of the first FPSs to have a storyline more complex than "kill the monsters," it came out a mere four months before Half-Life, and was immediately buried by the massive popularity of the latter game, especially after Counterstrike came out.

Yo, where do you play Multiplayer Duke3D now? TEN is long dead, and heat.net died as well.
Although I never played it much, Wolf3D was THE starter. It revolutionized gaming as we know it.

They used the quake engine ...

The Quake I engine, to be precise. (I remember getting into arguments over this a couple years ago on alt.games.jedi-knight.) However, the people at Valve Software modified the engine beyond all recognition; remember that the Q1 engine originally ran under DOS? The HL Q1 engine runs only under Win32.
About the only thing that the HL engine shares with Quake is how the configuration is done...
Yes you're right, HL is WAY more advanced, but if it wasn't for quake, HL wouldn't have legs to stand on.

I must agree with Hotfoot. Looking Glass spawned some of the best ever. May Looking Glass rest in peace.

You're beside the point, Aphex. Quake was revolutionary, yes, but not to the extent that Half-Life was. At any rate, I was merely pointing out that HL did not use the stock Quake engine, and that Valve made a significant effort of their own in the development of the HL engine.

Quake, while dated today, is the game that brought 3 dimensions, multiplayer, and custom mods, to the FPS world. I still remember the first time I "got" what Quake was about. Watching gibs fly and hearing the "tink-tink-tink" of grenades bouncing around corners is classic.

So you're pro half life

You're talking to the guy who used Half-Life avatars for over a year.
Of course I'm pro Half-Life. But I'm not anti-Quake, either. I just prefer Half-Life or Unreal over any of the Quakes.

I thought NOLF was kinda revolutionary.

Doom may have been the grand-dad of the genre, but Half-Life defined it.
Doom is like the Wright Bros aircraft. Amazing and new and cool when it was around.
Half-Life is like a modern jet liner. Nothing new at its core, but it uses the original concept and expands it to be comprehensive and definitive of its age: To give something for everyone in a manner that everyone can enjoy.

Wolf3D was the first PC game I ever played. Doom 2 was the third PC game I bought after X-Wing and Sim City 2000 in the year of our Lord 1994.
I voted for Doom. It was one of those games that started the era of online gaming and modding, and revolutionized the FPS genre. Although Duke Nukem 3D and Dark Forces were both more advanced, they were not nearly as influencial nor was Half Life.
*sniff* Oh, the nostalgia...

Nah. Marathon hada lot of the modern multiplayer stuf we take fro granted, had an incredibly complicated and deep storyline and NPCs in a sense (crazy computer and marines that wondering around helping you). Admittedly, the level of interaction wasn't what it is in Half Life. It was there quite a few years earlier though.

Crayz9000 wrote:By the way, why is Unreal missing? The Unreal engine was equally revolutionary, in that it was the first game to feature an alternate weapon fire, as well as being incredibly detailed and having amazing graphics that are, IMO, superior to most any Quake-based shooter.
Actually, quite a few games based on the Marathon engines had alternate weapon fire. Marathon II, Marathon Infinity, Damage Inc, etc. A lot of stuff creditted to Half-Life actually came about years before.

Marathon had all these things before it. Okay, it wasn't actually 3D in the nice plogonal way, but it wasn't the 2.5D of Doom. Since only Marathon II was released for the PC though, it never made as big a splash, sadly.

I do believe Goldeneye for the N64 deserves mention here. Granted, it's not a PC FPS, but it totally set the standard for FPS consol games.

Good point. Great gameplay and controls that didn't suck. Worked with Perfect Dark too. I never got into TimeSplitters 2 the same way though. Much more a Halo man. Wasn't overly found of Unreal Championship either.

That was not revolutionary at all ... well, maybe for consol gamming, but not in the way of FPS'ers
