I would say that the reason that civies might be on the DS is partly for propaganda, and partly for pratical reasons. Firstly the DS is by Imperial Propanganda a Mining Station. It was suposidly built to crack open dead planets to free the various ores etc in the core. As such it'd be expceted to be a civilian ran project.

Also the Death Star had IIRC 1,000,000 odd people on board and that a skeleton crew, the bare minimum to get it going. Those people have to live so you do need recreation centres, shops, galleys etc. You can't expect military personel to run all that, it'd be a waste of training. Also you need many administrators and civilain aids to help the military staff of the station. An Imperial Moff alone would need a support staff as would all the Armirals and Generals that Tarkin brought with him to show off.

Exactly, think of the DS as the largest military base ever, and consider the number of civilians that help run your average military base. A lot of them may be retired or former military, but they are definitely going to be present.

The Death Star is the only place where putting families is justified! Is large enough that these civis can live in places that the chance of casualties from an attack would be nil. The Death Star was considered the ultimate weapon with little chance of being successfully attacked. Also it is likely that since it is a self contained base that all logistic elements have to ber onboard. Since a soilder could be permentally st ationed on board have his wife nearby would be usful for moral reasons. This is not like a galaxy class ship where the chance of them getting hurt is much higher. Living on a battlestatioon is potentually hazardous but the same is true of civi's that live on base at US Military bases.

The sectors on the Death Star were called City Sprawls, but after scanning the Death Star source book I found nothing to suggest permanent civillian population. Most likley the civillians were just there to put the finishing touches on the death star.

Now as to how Luke, Leia, Chewie, and Han got past those officers, I have no clue other than Imperial facilities often gave leeway to those who just said they had proper clearence. (Like with R2-D2 and C-3P0 and the stormtroopers)

Maybe they were all prostitutes, to provide nookie to the sex-starved Imperial forces.

tho, the only time I heard it being a mining station was with qwi xux - she was brainwashed into making planet destroyers with other purposes anyway. any other examples of it being called that?

The captains of Napoleonic-era British manowars were afforded several "aides" each. If there was room enough on those relatively tiny ships for such accomodations, there's certain to be room enough for such accomodations on the DS.

I would say the exact opposite, I would say that of all the Empire's assets, this station should be kept out of bounds to civilians. How easy would it have been for the Rebels to sneak on a few of their own and cause considerable damage to the Empire's crown jewels? This is totally against the logic of the Empire, it just seems plain silly. Sure, the benefits are that the crew have barbers and nice parks! Whoopy do! This is an Imperial battlestation, not a FEDERATION ship; civilians should be back at home where they belong!

What makes you think a civilian with their restricted access could do anything remotely close to harming the death star? I'm sure if they had civilians (which makes sense, why train at the imperial academy for a few years to be a cook?) they would be kept in a nice area of the ship without any access to anywhere else.

I think something similar was mentioned in the X-Wing books. During the build up to the conquest of Coruscant the Rogue Squadron pilots went to the Imperial Gallery titled "Sacrafice At Endor". I might me wrong it's been a while since i last read the X-Wing books.

No it doesn't, since it's not canon. Either it's an edited out scene, or just "behind the cameras" stuff.

Besides, it's a fucking corridor! What, so civilians should not be allowed in any kind of corridor? What are the civilian areas supposed to look like, a really really big circular room?

Actually,there's a vocation in the navy called Ship's cook{or something along that line}.

So,yes,you do train for a few months to learn how to cook at sea.That's because a ship is a unique cooking environment,what with the waves and whatnot{a navy warship is not gryo-stablised like a cruise ship).

As for civilians,I'm actually in favour of this idea.The orginal scripts had the Death Star being built at Coruscant under a black project.If this was the idea when Lucas introduced it in ANH,then there should still be civilian contractors on the Death Star trials.

If I'm not wrong,the WEG Imperial Sourcebook detailed out the propganda that the Death Star was meant to be a mining machine.

The propaganda made it out to be a Rebel Death Star.
