Personally I think a fair number of bars are places just waiting to break out in violence. The one I was at is the "work" bar that I've been going to after work with my boss and co-workers for several years now, and though minor scuffles do happen from time to time it's never gone straight to hell like this before. Then again, there's always a first, and this was one of the very few times I'd ever been there on a Saturday. You learn a few things after studying various martial arts for over half your life. I knew that the only places a beer bottle could really hurt me was my head, face, and neck, anywhere else and I'll just get bruised and/or cut. I saw the bottle guy a bit too late to avoid him or take him out before he could hit me and I didn't trust my skills enough to try and jam his swing or trap his arm, so the only thing I could do was protect my head with my forearms and counter attack ASAP. BG left himself open and I hit him in the throat and I stomped his knee for good measure to make sure he stayed down.
