IIRC those torpedoes smashed the sphere to shit, blasting it into billions of tiny fragments. I don't any pieces of debris would survive re-entry.
And even if it did, how would the Borg drones survive the impact with the ground?
Both very good points.

Interesting how Borg drones survive a unpowered desent and still work but can't take knife attacks!

Or a rifle-butt to the jaw from Worf, whose strength is
vastly overrated by fanboys.

oddly, i was arguing this with a friend (check the Nanogator thread) and i didnt even know this thread existed. haha
his arguements were so funny. i made the exact same points that the entire thing was destroyed, and any debris would burn up or be destroyed on impact. his response? "you dont know that" or "they could survive"

The only thing that can live through the heat of re-entry is a bacterium called arkaia. It is found naturally in high temperature hot springs and other volcanic vent structures. It could theoretically survive the heat of re-entry. But the Borg, No way! And any Borg Ship does not have the structural integrity to handle re-entry without help(deflector shields) how could a unpowered piece have a chance! The thing has more holes than swiss cheese!

I wonder if the drones are going to be the mindless zombies they are supposed to be, or if they are going to be full of personality or something. As soon as one negotiates with Archer, or picks up a phase pistol to use it, I am changing the channel.

Uhm, where did a Borg ship come from?

I think they got an Earth transport and began to Borgify it.

"Resistance is futile, prepare to be Borgified."
Would anyone else have a problem taking the Borg seriously? lol

If it's an assimilated ship, then it isn't too bad. It just means the Borg can't assimilate an old ship and immediately equip it with top-of-the-line Borg weaponry. Or at least that they can't automatically increase the ship's reactor power enough to support heavier weaponry.

They did in "Scorpion". 7 of 9 was even preparing to manufacture the Borg's heaviest weapons from Voyager's onboard systems.

But there is a big difference between Starfleets top-o-the-line 24th century starship(at the time) and an old 22nd century freighter.

Watching the preview after Buffy, it seems that Dr. Phlox (or whatever his name is....) gets injected with nanoprobes. Do you think they'll kill him off or will they pull out a miracle tech out their ass to reverse the proces.

Hell no, they are not going to kill Phlox. They're going to pull something out of their asses to DE-Borgify him.

The plot of them finding the borg is so very similar to the Earth Alliance finding the Shoadows on Mars in B5.
I know how they survived the entry into the atmospher.
The borgs have a quantom micro nural plasma array that creats subspace particles that creat a mini black hole, thus activating the plasma conduits in their asses makeing mini anti grav units.

I think you just hurt my brain
Hey, maybe the borg nanoprobes were part their best before date, and they only halfway-work ....

The Borg Queen *vomit* is dead, so they shouldn't be acting normally. It'd either be braindead robots or something like the Borg Cooperative.

Well I justed finished watching this episode and it wasn't as bad as some of you seemed to fear it would be, in fact by Ent's standards it was a rather good episode.

To that end:
What's the most outrageous claim you've seen someone make of his strength?
Worf is strong, but he is not at all superhuman.
WRT the unpowered descent of sphere fragments, I went to startrek.com and watched the trailer for the episode. The fragments are HUGE! Where in the hell did THAT come from? Had that piece hit the surface, surely someone would've noticed sooner.
For that matter, Cochrane and Lily were familiar with the Borg...why didn't they document something about them, too?

Cochrane did but later recanted his statement.

He did? Interesting.

Not necesarily. Remember, these Borg are in the past, before the Queen was "killed." (I use quotation marks, because I myself have not seen any evidence shes dead for good.) They more than likely are connected to the collective of that time frame. That would be just another blow to continuity, because it would point out the Earth to the Borg many, many years earlier than they are supposed to.

They aren't and why would they be? the ones in First Contact weren't in communication with the borg of that timeframe either.

Well they don't so it isn't a blow to continuity.

Maybe the crashlanded Borg simply took the route of plugging themselves into the global computer network, or whatever survived of it, using that as their stopgap collective. They'd make for nasty, mindless, monotonous trolls, which would explain a lot.
Or, alternatively, they could do what an isolated group of Borg is apparently supposed to do: establish or maintain its own reduced-scope version of the Collective and attempt to reestablish the connection with the greater whole. That is in effect what the isolated sphere did in First Contact, and what 7 of 9 attempted to do when she and three other drones survived a crash landing in a Voyager episode whose title I can't recall. (Of course there were the usual tedious problems and Seven ended up forcibly networking the other three drones into a little peer-to-peer network.) The immature drones that Voyager picked up from a wrecked cube in yet another episode I don't care enough about to remember the title of had similarly formed their own little Collective when the greater Collective decided the cube was not worth bothering with.
I still favor the Borg haunting newsgroups and vs. boards, though.

The only way I could manage to write it for them to survive would be for them to be showing a very un borg like piece of ingenuity and use an antigravity system to drift down (and there's still a problem of certain layers of the atmosphere being very hot)
Or alternatively, have some of the borg from the deflector dish survive in hibernation, and remain in the enterprise's stable orbit, until (insert trading vessel/vulcan ship) picks up a borg signal (distress signal of some sort) and brings them in, then gets a nasty alienesque surprise.
