You're all lucky bastards for having broadband access at all, thankfully I'm at Uni and have it too but I'd like it at home as well so I can do stuff over the holidays without camping next to the PC.

That's weird.

Every time I go to the forum index, I automatcially get logged out. But my name still appears on the Who's Online list.

Is this happening to anyone else?

So far so good, Mike. Let me know if this holds out, I've been toying with the idea of hosting something on my own craptastic machine, and if you can handle SD.net on a home LAN, I can probably get by.

Much luck and may Bob The Small God bless your server!

Do you have automatic log in? And do you have an SDnet cookie on your machine?

I think I figured out the problem.

Since the main link was down earlier, I was using the alternate and I didn't know the main link was working again. Now that I'm using the main link, the problem seems to be fixed.

Actually, I'm from Canada.

oh, it's just that BT over here (the only real ADSL provider) has a bandwidth cap similar to the one you described. Anyway, as part of the Commonwealth, we own you so nyaah :P

We'll with less then twenty people on its running as fast as ever for me, the limit is my 56K connection. I doubt that will last when we reach the afternoon in North America.

With 61 it was running smooth and thats 3/4s the maximum it's ever had at one time, so it bodes well.

I guess so, I didn't notice this was from yesterday. Though it also depends on what rate people view pages.

Well I did some light posting last night during the high numbers and it seemed to be fine, though with the server at his house Mike will be able to dig up some proper load stats himself rather than our guess work.

It's running a little bit slower than normal when I open up multiple tabs to browse (as I tend to do) but otherwise it is running fine.

Anyway, so that's what happened! Did you get my email with the Tracerts and all that crap, Mike?

Just FYI, the server is actually handling the load without difficulty. I even went and copied roughly 4 GB of files from the server's HD to my PC's HD while the board was running, and there were no hiccups.

It's not an ideal situation. I don't know how my ISP will react to the bandwidth I'm using (I'll probably find out at the end of the month when I get my bill), I would need some more UPS units to improve the system's resilience to power interruptions (one for the central hub, one for the router/modem in a different room, and a much bigger one for the server), and of course, it restricts my ability to use my server for other purposes, move equipment around freely or upgrade hardware/sottware, etc. It would still be more convenient in many ways to have an offsite server, but as Lord MJ's server came back up and has already gone down again (it is not responding right now as I write this), moving the board back there is not a viable option yet. At least, not until he irons out these system problems.

However, I have definitely learned that my hardware and software are adequate to host the board with its current load. Just for those of you who are curious, the specifications are:

Intel 600MHz Celeron processor
512MB of PC100 RAM
30GB Quantum Fireball LM hard drive
Mandrake Linux OS
Onboard video/audio (not that it matters; the machine runs with no monitor or speakers connected anyway).
DSL connection to Internet (3Mbps download speed, 640kbps upload speed)

And that's roughly what it takes to self-host a BBS with as many as 60 users on it simultaneously. Not a super-powerful machine by any standards, although it was fairly current when I bought it (note that the system requirements are probably higher if you want to use a Windows OS and maintain acceptable server performance).

As I said, it would still be preferable to have an off-site host if possible at the current time, but I have certainly learned that it is technically feasible to self-host if necessary.

Yes, but that wasn't the problem. The Apache server daemon died on MJ's system. He's got some kind of software bug (his server is considerably more complex than mine, which strictly runs Apache and PHP/MySQL, with no open ports besides those that Apache needs).

That is a good example of why Linux has its advantages as a server OS. The company Im temping for uses Linux on its NAS boxes, and most of the competition like Iomega are going for Windows.

Yeah, DSL can actually handle an amazing amount of load. About the only time the activity indicator on my own DSL modem goes nuts is when I'm running Gnucleus, all three computers in the house are downloading something, and somebody is getting a large file off my Linux server.

Ah, okay. Boy that server burp sent me into a temper tantrum too. There were bad jujus about that day...
