TWTE: Hippies use the E-nil and one of her shuttles to find the mythical planet of Eden.
vs.
Trek V: Sybok and thugs...well, steal the ship, to go to Eden, using a shuttle to land on the surface.
TWTE: The planet itself beautiful, but all isn't what it seems: even the flowers are filled with acid, a'la the good old xenomorph.
vs.
ST:V: God's planet covered with pretty blue whisps of cotton candy. God himself looks like Santa Claus but, in reality, is a royal asshole.
TWTE: Chekov knows one of the cult members, "Irina Galliulin," intimately. She dropped out of Starfleet Academy and broke up with Pavel because the two had "differing life philosophies" (ref: http://www.sherylfranklin.com/trekwomen ... iulin.html, presumably from the ST:E).
vs.
ST:V: Spock already knows the leader of the cult, Sybok, a brilliant Vulcan fuck-up who abandoned "Vulcan life philosophy" for something radically different.
TWTE: The whole time, Kirk was also concerned about the Romulans popping up and ruining the party.
vs.
ST:V: In a sneaky twist (HA!), Klingons take the place of Romulans here; also, the Klingons sneak up on Kirk. Call this a crude reversal of what happened in TWTE.
Anyway, I think you get the idea.
As for your other points, I agree...there were some good lines in Trek V. "What does god need with a starship?" is classic.
However, do a couple of decent lines save an otherwise terrible film?
I don't think so. And I grant you, yes, some of it was indeed tongue-in-cheek, but IMO, a film's sense of seriousness about itself doesn't make or break it alone (not that you're suggesting it does, of course). AOTC, for instance, seemed to take itself pretty seriously, even during times that such was to its disadvantage; regardless, overall, I loved the film.
Now, had Trek V handled its humor really well, that'd be another matter...most of it just didn't have me in stitches. The retarded version of Data from "Nemesis" probably made me laugh more than Bones cussing when Kirk climbed up that rock. It was definitely funnier than Uhura dancing...

Also, while I'm thinking of it, Trek V had some truly horrendous dialogue, too. When the E-A arrives at "the center of the galaxy" and everyone sees that cotton candy planet for the first time, we're treated to something like this:
Burly Klingon General: "Qui'Tu!"
Romulan woman: "Vorta Vor!"
David Warner as Federation ambassador, breathlessly: "EDEN!"
AGH!!!!! All in sequence, no less. It was as if Shatner knew the FX of that planet would really suck, so he wanted his actors to go over the top in expressing their amazement.
