Ah, but they did expect serious opposition. The Emperor knew the Rebels were coming and had "a legion of [his] best troops." You have to wonder why the best troops would be wearing white armor in a forest.

Because Imperial scouts had determined that ewoks were not a threat. Look at it this way. If there had been no ewoks then the rebels would have been quickly crushed on Endor. Camo would have been pointless. In fact I fail to see how camo would have helped them to defeat thousands of ewoks. Im sure the ewoks could smell and hear them just as well as they could see them.

I'd also add that the bulk of the Stormtroopers weren't planning to operate in the forest anyway, just around the base itself.

It was still sloppy IMO, but not inexplicably so. The stormies thought it would be a blue milk run and they didn't plan adequately. Of course, if the AT-ST driver hadn't made the mistake of opening the hatch and letting Chewie in, they'd have probably won regardless.
