Hats off to the valiant Yanks, Brits and Canucks, plus the Free French, Poles, Dutchmen, and anyone else who participated in the invasion. I'll also give a moment of silence for the many German lives lost that day.

I dont think I have any relatives who served during WW2. Not immediate relatives anyway. It is amazing to think of the level of carnage they had to endure. And for the length of time they had to endure.

Fortunately, neither of my grandfathers saw action during the war. My father's father was drafted late in the war and made an MP on a base in LA. He was married, had a child, and was a mechanical engineer, so there was little likelihood of them putting him on the frontlines.
My mother's father was a poor kid from Kentucky who dropped out of high school to join the navy. He went from battle site to battle site around the pacific after the battles, clearing away wreckage and debris and building bases and airfields.
