That would require using something OTHER than Plasma Conduits! As these are what are actually cooking off when the infamous consols explode! Basically the power line running the things are the problem!

But...but plasma conduits are so much more advanced and efficient.
Tell that to the poor redshirt thart is in need of cleaning off of the Walls!

Or to go fix damaged areas of the ship after combat. WTF happened to the grease monkeys who handle that stuff? Last I checked, Destroyer captains don't oil the turbines (or whatever) while on duty in real life.

There used to be some debate as to whether Starfleet even constitutes a military. Here are my musings:

1.) Maybe Starfleet needs to look into Romulan singularity-based warp drive. Having served in the Navy as a reactor plant mechanic, I'm pretty sure the U.S. Navy would never use matter-antimatter reactors. They can't fail safe, and the Navy (indeed any effective military organization) is ridiculously anal about safety and operating procedures. For instance.

2.) We do need to work on our weapon designs. I almost threw my soda at the screen when Picard's phaser rifle fucking BROKE IN HALF against a Reman's head in Nemesis. Starfleet phasers should be black, with rubberized grips, real barrels, spotlights, and laser sights. White ones. The rifles should be basically the same, but with a stock and bipod. Some sort of auto targeting would be nice too. And let's have some type of grenade, please?

3.) You can fit about 400 photon torpedoes on the floor of a basketball court with room for machinery to get to them. And I'm assuming they can be stacked. So the Sovereign class should carry tens of thousands of these, or quantums if they're the same size.

4.) I find it laughable that these computer terminals (let's have some actual buttons and switches you can FEEL?) could possibly need so much power that we need plasma. I can understand, say, the replicators (why is there one on the bridge?), which CONTRARY to what the Wars fans assert, do not work like duplicators. They convert energy to matter like a transporter.

5.) Let's see some serious ground vehicles (the Argo isn't so hot). Obviously, there were serious budget constraints during the series run, but there should be canon manuals or something explaining that the Fleet does have them.

6.) The Borg allowed the GC Enterprise to beam people aboard with phasers and even Data. Why did we not try to beam...say...high explosives of some sort?

7.) Obvious weapon ideas that were never developed: Omega particles, soliton wave drive (said to be capable of destroying most of a planet), transphasic torpedoes (how do they work?), thalaron radiation, dreadnaught missiles, collapsing warp shells, Borg nanites, and my personal favorite, the Metrion Cascade. Why destroy the whole planet when you can just scour the surface and achieve the same tactical effect?

8.) Each member of a boarding party should carry a self-destruct so they can't be captured, and they cause more damage if they're killed.

9.) Exo-comps with weapons, anyone? But let's not make them sentient.

10.) Emergency tactical holograms, either for deception or to beat down boarders. And you could use holography to mask sensitive parts of the ship from boarders. "Hey, I thought this was the engine room, but it looks like the arboretum. What gives?"

11.) There was a novel by Dafydd ab Hugh where we found out Neelix carries an extra phaser in one boot and a communicator in the other. Janeway looked at him like he was crazy, but he saved her ass.

12.) Obviously, Federation technology boasts something like the Light Saber. Why doesn't this see use as a weapon, or a bayonet on a phaser?

13.) The navigational deflector should always be rigged to fire like a phaser.

14.) Certainly they can train Betazoids and Vulcans to scan prisoners? Each ship should have a few telepaths.

15.) And yes, we do need to get in the habit of acquiring new tech however we can.

16.) I'd give Section 31 a big budget increase. Cloaked Defiants and Prometheuses for everyone!

And yes, real military ships have a damage control department. You don't need Riker to tell Geordi to seal off breached sections.

More ideas:

1.) Scarier names like Inferno or Eviscerator.

2.) Different classes of vehicles for (gasp) different applications:

Space Warfare
Planetary Invasion/Occupation Platforms
Surface Warfare
Industrial Support
Fighters
Shuttles/Launches
Ground Transports
Ground Fighters (fast tanks or Metal Gear)

3.) Let's see some ships that regenerate when they're damaged, with sections that can keep fighting even if the ship is blown in half.

4.) Multiple sets of shields.

5.) Yes, time travel. Go back in time after you get your ass kicked, and warn yourself. Or just go forward and get better weapons.

6.) Many planets have moons or asteroids nearby which can be turned into hailstones. It's not fun for the people on the ground.

7.) Inject every member of Starfleet with nanites that repair injury.

8.) I bet plasma napalm would be fun.

9.) Pockets.

10.) Martial arts training, especially for Captain Archer.

11.) None of these TOS-era "ladies" on starships. They make me ashamed to be have two X chromosomes. Wusses.

It's Ok to shoot first at the enemy, in fact, what the hell are they doing NOT shooting first?

It's Ok to kill the enemy, none of that wussy "let's find another way to neutralize them" shit.

It's Ok to shoot the enemy in the back, in fact it should be encouraged.

It's Ok to use excessive force to kill. There's nothing wrong with a 5 on 1 gang rape using superior technology, weapons and firepower.

It's Ok to ambush the enemy and gang rape the fuckers.

It's Ok to booby trap bodies and ships so they blow up when they enemy tries to recover them.

It's Ok to exterminate a species that starts a war with you and won't surrender.

It's Ok to make and use superweapons of destruction.

Your phasers have wide-beam stun settings that can knock out an entire bridge in one shot. Next time there's a firefight, USE THEM!

Okay, that's not really 20th century military wisdom, but taking full advantage of your weapons' capabilities is.

Then you pull and IJN and create a Special Naval Landing Force by training a bunch of sailors to be infantry.

My problem is that they can CG in all these different ships, but they can't CG in one decent looking tank?! Bah!
