I'm willing to bet that within 50 years, there will be at least one all CGI "live action" movie. The actors will be scanned in. The only non-CGI stuff will be voices, music and sound effects.

Even then they may be able to synthesize voices.

That's precisely why I love ESB. The AT-ATs move with a slow forboding
that is just fucking scary. They take shot after shot and keep plodding forward.

That's more about script (and Imperial technology) than special effects...

All things being equal, the cheaper method is better. This is why there were still hundreds of models, sets, costumes, etc created for TPM and AOTC. The cheaper CGI is, the wider it will be used.
