It's because they sound stupid and made up, and their textual renderings are attrocious. Not at all like real names.

And apparently I have a second cousin named Patrick Robert...

Please define "sounds stupid" and "made up".
Not at all like real names.
What's a real name exactly? Can you please define it?

A traditional name that means something in its native language instead of a random collection of syllables?

My family has a tendency to pick up unusual middle names.

My father and I (I'm a junior) both have middle names generally associated with women (Francis), while my grandfather's middle name is Wombaugh.

Worst name I know of isn't a first name, but last. There's a fellow in one of my classes named Franklin Dippy. Anyone with that last name should change it immediately.
Funniest one in translation is a friend of mine named Cathalain Marie, which translates to "bitter virgin."
There's another friend of mine named Genoa (pronounced like the name Jenny), who got that name after a sail of some sort (not the Genoa Columbus is from).
I have another friend named Jaci (pronounced like the letters J-C) who's pretty cool about having an odd name.

you know what annoys me? Mixing ultra-ethinc names and the child is neither of the ethnicities. Like Vincinezo Akira when you last name is something like Smith.....or Seamus Jaquim with a last name Garcia. Yippe! please beat me up! I'm Seamus Jaquim the Puerto Rician Irish Jewboy!

In the comic "The Gringo On Ilha Grande" by Gerard Lauzier , some of the female characters have names which seem strange to us gringos - such as Noemia, Arminda, Isaura, Adelina and Zenaide.

However, the book is supposedly based upon the author's own experiences in Brazil - and given that some Latin names seem weird, I have not problems believing that there are many women out in the world with these names.

I know that, but even though Portuguese and Spanish are different languages, they are somewhat similar.

Tradition is not a reason for stopping invention.

But why? Who cares if it doesn't mean anything?

it is very similar to Spanish, to me it sounds like drunkin Spanish. i can understand a good bit of Portugese if spoken slowly or if i'm given enough time to read it

But it isn't for calling a name "real" or not, which is what Spanky was talking about.

WE'RE not the ones being sensitive. You were obviously trying to paint the Spankmeister as a racist or something, when that is totally not true. (At least as far as I can tell... )
A "Real" Name is something that, traditionally has a meaning associated with it. and it can be unusual. Look at some of the names pouring out of the middle east (That we americans were only recently exposed to) Itzak Al-Habim Al-shrinda Makari, and the like. Do I think THEY'RE stupid? No. They have a meaning. typically they identify a person's lineage, as I understand it. But names like LaRinda, Chanequa, RaDermia, Taquishita, and their ilk mean nothing, SOUND made up, and sound unintelligent. Whether YOU like it or not, the world is a harsh place, and people DO judge other people on superficial bullshit like their names. It happens, it has happened and will continue to happen, and parents should consider this before naming their kids after a sound they make when they sneeze.

Yes it is. Haven't you been paying attention? Real names are more or less defined as traditional names with true meaning, not a jumble of random syllables.

I wouldn't wonder, where else but your arse? A name for a person doesn't have to be either traditional or have a meaning for it to be acceptable. That's the point you guys are missing it seems.

I'm sorry, I'm not familiar with BBcode as you all are, so I can't split up a quote. :)
I didn't say I personally would judge based on a name,(and I wouldn't) but alot of people do. and I was giving examples, not talking about specifics (Ref. Chanequa-it does not sound ethnic to me). And yes, alot of those names are a random assortment of meaningless syllables and they DO sound stupid (Not to say the PERSON is stupid). that's my opinion, and I won't change it. until you can show me something which legitimizes these names as derivatives of meaningful words from other languages, they will remain stupid and sound like the mutterings of a language which never existed.
Keep in mind many people are petty, mean-spirited, and evil. Alas, with my jaded view of humans in general, My opinion of people as such will remain unchanged.

Nice strawman. Notice how we never said that such names were unacceptable.

How about you set "vaguely threatening trolling" to off? If you wanted to get Spanky to admit to there being no such thing as a real name, then come out and fucking say it in the first place instead of this beat-around-the-bush crap.

 I can't just say "there's no such thing as a real name" and expect Spanky to suddenly agree. I have to get him to question his own opinion. And I do that by asking questions.
