I liked Dungeon Siege. It's the only RPG I've ever actually played all the way through (though it does get pretty boring towards the end).

I almost beat Diablo II, but then I got bored with my character and moved on.

There is no way in hell that either Dungeon Siege OR Diablo 2 are RPGs.

Seconded. They are action/adventure games integreated with a leveling/experience point system.

A racing game that gives you money for each race to buy better parts uses the same basic system, but it's not an RPG, either (though the way 'roleplaying' is thrown around these days, the term pretty much is defined as whatever game has such a system. Go figure).

At the moment we are in kind of a lull, but there are still some stuff availible. Note that these are the less popular games as I'm sure you know which Final Fantasy to buy.

Shadow Hearts (PS2): Fun RPG set in the 1930's where magic is considered a part of life. Good humor, great art design and a good story once it picks up.

Chrono Trigger (SNES/PSX): Yes, this is an oldie, but may be the best RPG ever made. Buy it and keep in under your pillow at night.

Grandia II (PS2): A fun sequel to one of the greatest RPG's for the PSX. Has one of the best battle systems in any RPG in history.

There's also some stuff upcoming in the next few months to watch out for:

Sudeki (Xbox - Jan. 2004): This is it--Microsoft's answer to Final Fantasy. Aside from the fact that this may be the prettiest game I've ever seen, it looks like it redefines enough RPG conventions to make it worth checking out.

Fable (Xbox - Q2 2004): Peter Molenux's attempt to redefine the RPG. Looks great, but it may be a bit too ambitious. One nice feature is a co-op mode that lets you play the single player with a friend.

How bout anything without the stat-upping, magic-swording, +5/+5 wanking garbage that constitutes what most people call 'RPG's? Ironically, lame old D20-based KOTOR actually has some roles to play, unlike almost everything else. Fallout is FUNNY. FF is DRAMATIC. D&D is TURN BASED. None of them are Role Playing.

I'm bitter. Shadowrun'll do that to you. :D

Arguably...all games are roleplaying...you assume a role that technically..you couldn't hope to have in the real world...for exactly...a post apocalyptic gun slinger with a bad attitude and a potted plant or an admiral onboard a pirate vessel during the spanish armada days

Or even a 'hero' saving a world from the big bad red...all that is roleplaying by definition...some of it is just better than others

All right fine, then I don't like any RPGs. Are the Baldur's Gate games RPGs? Because I've watched my friend play those, and they look stupid as hell. They should start doing more RPGs that don't have anything to do with swords-and-sorcery.

Discworld Noir is by far the best of the 3.

Oh yeah? Well, you look stoopid too!

Indeed they should. At least we have Fallout... there's also the Buck Roger RPG games made by SSI, they're pretty cool. Instead of +1 or +2 weapons, you have weapons "made in earth", "made in mars", "made on the moon" that have the same kind of bonus :)
