IIRC Golan III's where only the equivilant of a Victory Class SD so to have just 2 of them is pretty shitty given the fact that they are imobile and have to cover an entire planet.

Well, to their credit Golans are probably more customs stops and patrol and security platforms. They're pretty shitty/useless for defense against attack because of 3-D Space and their lack of mobility.

A Golan II is considered to be fully the equivlant of an
Imperator-class Star Destroyer according to WEG, and a Golan III is noticeably more powerful, to my recollection.

According to WEG Last Command Sourcebook , the Golan II is larger than an ISD with a length of 2,158 meters and armaments include 35 turbolaser batteries, 10 proton torpedo launches, and 8 tractor beam projectors. A golan III is 2,600 meters long, and has 50 turbolaser batteries, 24 proton torpedo launchers, and 15 tractor beams. Since they are orbital stations, I'm assuming that they boast more powerful shields than starships of comparable size, which may explain why they could be useful in combat.

And thanks to Stackpole, Rogue Squadron can punch through this thing's shields.

Which has the highest level of officiality? The EU Rogue Squadron Book that says a Golan III is an imobile Vic or the Last Command Source book?

Well, there's a possibility Bilbringi was defended by Golan IIs, and not Golan IIIs. I don't remember off the top though.

I was thinking more in terms of Thrawns attack on Coruscant. We know Golan IIIs definately defended Coruscant so why wasn't more damage delt to Thrawns ISD's?

All its called in Isard's Revenge is a Golan Space Defense Platform, so it could be an orginal series before the IIs or IIIs

Thrawn didn't setp into the killing zone?
The novel seemed to emphasise on Thrawn keeping at long range throughout the battle, refusing to close in with Coruscant spaceborne and ground defences.
