Random thought just struck me... Why not try for a spiral/helix satelite? I think it would look interesting...

My first design idea was going to be based on the old drawings of SDI satellites from the Reagan era 'Star Wars' program. They showed a huge glowing, spiral lasing tube filling most of the central section of the rather gun-like satellite. However I discarded it as a couple of others in the competition had also used a similar design, and i didn't want to just join the crowd. As it turns out most of the entries have ended up with some type of sail array on them, we are all influenced by the same sources it would seem.

The form/function debate will never be resolved, certainly not as long as we're making purely conjectural and futuristic models that no one can even begin to make work right now. So my satellite has panels? Pretty much all satellites right now have panels or arrays of one kind or another, it's one of the identifying features of a satellite and so i have to put them on mine to identify it as a satellite. Without them there's no telling if it's a ship, a handgun, a torpedo or whatever. With the sails it instantly becomes recognisable as some kind of satellite, a weapon or transceiver in space. If you need them to have a function then voila! They're heat exchangers, massive cooling panels to help dissipate the heat from firing the weapon, or for cooling the massive reactor as it runs up to speed.
