Well, I meant with the protocols and actual backbone connections; the hardware is not bog-standard I2 stuff, AFAIK (my university is on Internet2).
The article doesn't say that it uses Internet2, only that it was announced at the conference.

No, it doesn't say its on Internet2, but it's implied, and Internet2 is the big high-bandwidth thing that CERN and Caltech are part of the developement team for, so it would figure that it is indeed I2. Also, the fact that standard I1 pipelines wouldn't be able to handle those data rates suggests that it must be I2.

There is more than one high-speed academic network in existance.
