HA! You give too much credit to the average kid these days. Then again, Canadian education system far exceeds US I believe.
In High School surrounded by the elite I thought everyone was smart. It took coming to college to realize everyone is stupid.

Actually, when it comes to attempted murder, stupidity IS a defense. Attempted murder means they had to be trying to kill the teacher, otherwise it is reckless endangerment.
Wouldnt that be attempted manslaughter?

Don't think that every school in the US ran the way you did (something I find a lot of suburban kids are guilty of thinking) and even if they ran the system that way they could have skipped it by having taken another science that comes before it during middle school so they would have just skipped it.

From the article:
For the time being, the school has suspended the two teenagers while it decides whether to expel them.
I take it that would have taken all of two seconds to decide.

No, there is no such thing as attempted manslaughter AFAIK. The only distinction is if they were actually trying to KILL the teacher, not just cause harm. Otherwise it is reckless endangerment. Attempted murder is a VERY serious felony and is some states it carries a penalty equal to murder.
