My thoughts on some of the choices:
D&D 3rde: A huge improvement over 2nde! Just the coherent skill system was worth the price of the books, and everything else is also so much smoother now.
D&D 3.5: Very slightly better than D&D 3rd, not worth the price of a new book if you have 3.0.
D&D 2e: Gah.
GURPS: Does a lot of things well, and is admirable in its generality. Can become as good as 3rd ed with just a bit of GM effort,
World of Darkness: Haven't played much of it, but seemed pretty nice.
Shadowrun: On one hand, I love the way they handle the magic system. On the other, the 5-6/6-7 disjunction in target numbers really sucks, and a lot of metagaming. There are other good and bad things too.
Silhouette: From the little I've heard I like it a lot.
42: Always the correct answer, and I wish I'd seen it before voting.

SDN Rangers: Gunnery Officer
They may have claymores and Dragons, but we have Bolos and Ogres.
