I remember reading somewhere that Francis Ford Coppola pushed GL to try and make the Force a genuine religion when he saw ANH. Coppolla figured that hey, its the 70's there was a lot of new age stuff going down and that GL could make a FORTUNE as a cult leader with movies to back him up.

GL said no.

Kind of says a lot about both men, huh?
Yes GL is an idiot :D
Do you relise how cool it would have been to have your own personal religous following in time for ROTJ :D

Closer to three thousand, and some of the stories can be traced back more than 7,000 years from the present day, IIRC.

Of course, this is from remembered dribs and drabs from my pre-Confirmation classes (10 years ago), so I might be remembering wrong...

But I wonder how he would have dealt with the heresy that was TPM?? The mass exodus could only have been staunched by the mystery of: Three years later, the franchise rose again as Attack of the Clones. :D

If you are going to debate "Jedi" being a religion, you should be able to understand what religion is all about. And I think it would be more of a belief shared by people of many creeds. And if anyone's thinking of it, this thread should stay in off-topic, because the S&L forum is about science and logic, not religion-bashing, even if it seems that way.

Is it funny because we're promoting unusual religions, or because people believe things as ridiculous as the things we talk about?

I think the largest hurdle is that the people who believe in the Jesus myth actually believe Jesus was real, God is the ultimate power and the Bible is God's word. Star Trek and Star Wars are 'genuine' myths, ancient fables given a post-modern twist. Tell a Christian that God is a myth and note the reaction. Tell a Warsian that the Force is mythical and you'll get a wholly different reaction. We could no doubt call them both 'religions', but they'd never be accepted as such.
That's because Warsies are rational when their beliefs are challenged. Most Christians are not.
