Just to corroborate this statement:

Lightsaber (standard): 2d8 (2-16)
Blaster (standard): 3d6 (3-18 )
Blaster (heavy): 3d8 (3-24)
Blaster rifle (std.): 3d8 (3-24)

So, wielded by an untrained individual (or fledgling Jedi), according to WOTC, lightsabers are actually weaker than blasters. However, as a Jedi character increases in level, the damage of a lightsaber increases as well, up to 6d8 (6-48 ) at 20th level, whereas blaster damage never gets this high (highest is a bowcaster, dealing 3d10 or 3-30).
