Down is more comfortable.

Down when I'm soft, but I position it facing up when I have an erection beacuse it's harder to see that way. If only it would stay in that position...

Yes, but with the proper mindset, those awkard situations can generally be confined to less awkard and appropriate moments.

If I'm facing it down, and something arises, I put my hand in my pocket and grab the side of my boxers, allowing it some room, so I align it up as an effort to hide, long shirts and loose pants help greatly.

Down left. I angle it up when an unexpected popler comes and stays up, but I can usually concentrate and force it to go limp again, so it is rare.
