You find the best position to do so, and it takes you 5 mins. Given the time limit, and the expediency, it proves adequate to your needs. You have 1/2 cover which equals +4 to your AC. Note: your ACR isn't a sniper rifle, but it's range is quite good. The sights on it are standard telescopic, but they're slightly damaged due to the circumstances in which you acquired the weapon. Instead of the +2 to attack, you only gain +1.
It takes you a short amount of time to reacquire the targets: one of the two is obviously big, though you can't get much detail other than that. They're moving at a fair pace. They're maybe 5 mins away.

Stofsk wrote:"ss-Human Alex-ss, your people are mos-sst rude. I lament the loss-ss of my ship, the Karvean. My ss-Sire would not have been proud."
Alex winces.
"Yeah, sorry about that. Karvean was a good ship, although the inertial dampeners in her escape pods could have used a little work. Tell you what, when and if we get out of this I'll look into getting you some reimbursement."
His grins, continuing good-humouredly.
"And may I add that the Sharadan are hardly "my" people. Other than the little matter of species, of course."
His face turns grave again.
"Anyway, we'd better be on our guard. Invasions have a habit of bringing out the worst in people. For all we know, our little makeshift "lair" here could already be occupied."
He unholsters his pistol, making certain it is loaded.
"Let's try to approach the house quietly from an angle where we'll be harder to see. Better safe than sorry, I always say."
(Just to add, if you don't consider this fair, I can change it.)

Yes.

Try not to meta-game, as in use your personal knowledge in the real-world and apply that to your character's actions. For instance, the
Artemis's equipment loadout is publicly documented so you can easily find out what they carry. This is personal knowledge. It is not character knowledge, unless your character talks with Tycho's or Faxy's and finds out from them what the
Artemis is carrying. It would be meta-gaming to base your character's decisions on what you know, not what your character knows.
That said, your course of action seems ultimately wise - there very well
could be someone lying in wait in the house - but it can also be seen as pushing the boundaries.
In any case, the house's entrance faces you (ie it's sides are to the lake and the treeline, while the front is towards the pod). It's double storied house, and there are 2 windows (both shattered) on the top floor. There are 2 larger windows, again shattered, on the bottom floor. In terms of cover or concealment, there is nothing around except the treeline.

(Yeah, I know, and that's why I put that qualifier. I thought about it for a long time, and it seemed reasonable that he would want to be careful... but I tried to figure out if I would have taken the same course of action had I not known someone was in there, and I think I might, but I can't be sure.

I briefly thought about having them split up and approach the house from different angles, and even using more esoteric means to determine if the house had occupants, but I decided that seemed too much, when they're not suspecting anything.
Ultimately, I just don't want to make stupid mistakes that the character, who is trained, intelligent, and has been in dangerous situations somewhat similar to this before, wouldn't make. Know what I mean?)

Nev glides through the water silently, relishing the feel of water against his skin for a long while. With reluctance, he swims up the surface, and pokes his head tentatively above the water. He looks around, getting the lay of the land.

You spot a house by the lake - to your eyes it looks deserted. You can also make out two figures, but it is too far to gain any detail. They're about a 50 metres distant.

Nev dives back beneath the surface, and swims to the edge of the lack hovering underwater. He pulls out his auto pistol and loads a magazine, then surfaces his head again.

You don't have an autopistol, it's not a part of the Artemis's armoury.

But it's in my character sheet. Wtf? Nev can't carry his personal weapon?

And I can't access your character sheet. However, both you and Faxmodem1 asked me what was on the Artemis - equipment, ship's stores, defensive systems etc. The list is on page 1 of this thread. I didn't list an autopistol as being part of the ship's armoury, and you didn't ask for one either, it just appeared.
If you want an autopistol then ask for one. Or find one in-game. Or buy one in-game. But since you asked for an equipment manifest on the Artemis which I've provided, I don't see why an autopistol is more valuable than a carbine.

OK, ok. Scratch the auto-pistol and lets just say I carried the carbine. Problem solved.

At this point the two figures outside the house sense something, which you don't. They were headed for the house, but stopped as though something distant caught their attention.
The treeline is heavy, but there's a dirt road which leads from the house in the direction of, presumably, the city.
You hear one of the two speak, and it's voice is raspy and snake like. You can't hear what is said, but it sounded like human words.

Nev slowly rises from the water, his finger on the carbine's trigger. He keeps his eyes on the 2 people, and begins walking slowly towards them. "Greetings! I mean no harm!" he shouts out boldly.

Alex and Kravis stop their approach to the house as they hear the sound of a vehicle rushing down the dirt road. Half a beat passes, then Nev pops up out of the water and calls out to them, not hearing the approaching vehicle.
The human and Chel'noirn have their attention divided between two different disturbances.

Dammit! Company's coming sooner than I expected!
He turns to suggest to Kravis that they get out of sight, forget the house, and get out of here as quickly as possible, but before he can another disturbance catches his attention.
Captain tycho wrote:"Greetings! I mean no harm!" he shouts out boldly.
Startled, Alex turns and nearly raises his pistol at the the Sonnergatt striding from the water. As rational thought takes over from instinct, his brain comprehends the words, and he sees that while the stranger is armed, he is not threatening them. Making a snap decision, he decides that the unknown vehicle coming down the road is probably a greater threat than the alien of indeterminate allegiance who claims he means no harm and could have taken a free shot at them, but didn't. He lowers his pistol and calls out to him.
"That's wonderful! However, while we might not mean each other any harm, there're people approaching who might mean us both some harm, so I suggest you follow my lead! Either that, or dive back in the lake!"
He motions to Kravis, and heads for the treeline.

Jax keeps going at full speed, and then kicks in the brakes (including the parking brake), trying to super-slow the vechicle so that it stops right by the people on the road.

Ed is somewhat alarmed by the appearance of two others. He remains concealed, trying to discern the intentions of the motley group.

Nev runs up closer to the pair, flicking the safety of his carbine off. "Count me in if you end up fightning. I'm in need of allies in this place, and the two of you look good enough."

You all see a single jeep come down the dirt road, then when the driver spots the great big walking lizard, he slams his foot down on the breaks and the jeep skids and comes to a halt. Nev has now joined the two pod survivors, and all three have their weapons raised at the newest arrival.

Nev growls threateningly, and raises his carbine to the newcomer. "Hold it there now. We woudln't want my finger to slip on the trigger and have a nasty accident would we?"

O...K, a guy in a jeep. I'm going to take a wild guess and say he's not a Sharadan military patrol. Still, he's in an awful hurry...
"Nice night for a drive, I take it?"
Nev growls threateningly, and raises his carbine to the newcomer. "Hold it there now. We woudln't want my finger to slip on the trigger and have a nasty accident would we?"
"Whoa, easy. Didn't mean to get your blood riled up, but this guy wasn't the company I was expecting."
Alex smiles in a way he hopes is disarming.
"This is becoming a regular party. How about you step out of the jeep, we'll lower our weapons, and we can all introduce ourselves like civilized people?"

Nev laughs mirthlessly. "Can't be too careful around here," he says as he lowers his carbine a hair. "Now, who might you be, and if the first words outta your mouth are 'Officer of the Sharandan Empire', well, they will also be your last, if you get my meaning."
