Did you know it's illegal to own assualt weapons? Well it is, the government doesnt want the people rebelling with their own weapons so they keep the from owning them.
That. Kurgan, is what i figure is going on with Lightsabers. the public isnt allowed to own them, only Jedi and ex-Jedi, or those can get them illegally. Sort of like the Bazooka i have im my...forget i said that, i said nothing, nothing!

Doubtful considering that most people seem to be carrying around a small arsenal (Jango/Boba Fett's
Slave 1 was particularly impressive).
It is much more likely that Lightsabers are simply useless to your average non-Jedi. They wouldn't be able to block blaster shots and they stand a good chance of killing themselves with the thing, so what's the point?

I doubt it. Jango and his son were both bounty hunters. Clearly they got that stuff over dubious channels (i.e. the very illegal black market).

That is a good idea, perhaps only Jedi are legally allowed to have lightsabers in the Republic (and the Sith in the case of the Empire).
But yeah, that wouldn't explain why criminals are never seen with them, since they could have obtained them illegally.

So? Can you see any Bounty Hunters today using military grade hardware? Further, if they can get them, then what is to stop others like them from getting lightsabers if they want them?

Let see? Well maybe because every Jedi/Sith personally makes their own sabre???? Its not like blastech mass produce them! Where the hell would you get a sabre from??

mainly the fact that lightsabers are extremely rare, costly to make, and difficult if not impossible to make for most people outside of force users?

I can buy that they are illegal, but it still wouldn't stop less dubious operators from carrying them. So logically the only reason they don't is because they are useless to anyone but a Jedi. Han dismissed Luke's lightsaber as an "ancient weapon" in ANH because it wouldn't help anyone but a Jedi against someone armed with a blaster.

What would make them nearly impossible to make for anyone but force users? Luke had relatively little Jedi training (certainly none in the manufacturing of lightsabers that we saw) and yet he was able to build one after his original one was lost. This seems like a stretch considering that there is a much simpler explanation (that no one but Jedi have a use for them).

iirc, the crystals used in construction of the lightsabers need to have time spent being attuned to the force, and the sabers can take anywhere from a few days to weeks to construct depending on how intricate the creator wants to get. also, keep in mind luke had to return obi-wan's cave to retrieve the holocron for instructions on how to build one. it's not as though instructions on lightsaber creation are commonplace.

I thought he simply used instructions, that Obi-Wan had in a book......

eh. either way it's not as though instructions for making lightsabers are common place. *shrug*

As I recall, if the user wants to make a lightsaber by hand very quickly (as in within a week), he or she will have to use the Force to assist. Otherwise, it should be possible to do over a longer period of time (a month or so by hand).

I think this whole "need the force to build lightsabers" is idiotic.
Weren't the mention of factory-produced lightsabers once?

Yes, in the Young Jedi Knights series. By KJA.
Basically, this is how I see it: Machines are precise enough to align the crystals properly so that the sabre won't explode, but us meatbags are not. So we must use the Force to set the crystals in right, and avoid explosive deaths.

Lightsabres and their crystals have NOTHING to do with the Force. These are not Samurai katanas we're talking about.

Ok, heres a better theory...maybe the Jedi suppressed them.
Lets assume that you could use a lightsaber like a Jedi given eough practice. Then what good are Jedi?
It could be like a religious moray, maybe the Jedi see you with a lightsaber and no brown robes and you get guilotened. Like in the 1700s when they killed anyone with black cats cause they thought they were evil, but in this case their is a legitimate fear by the Jedi of being replaced. And when the Empire took over, the Sith did the same.
I'm sure there is some political reason for it.
Damn shadow government.

Regular people could never use a lightsaber effectively. The lack the Jedi reflexes and pre-cog abilities.

18: Don't hypothesise stuff that's already known.
Yes, part of it was because of the massless blade which made them very difficult to use properly. They were also a symbol of the Jedi.
Of course, the Empire also banned them.

I, Jedi. It was when Corran needed to build a lightsaber for himself. I don't recall what it says about the longer, preferred method Luke talked about, though I recall it taking about a month. Corran didn't have that time, so he used an alternative method that I think took about a week. That shorter method definitely required the Force. Of course, Corran was building it by hand.
I'm sure factory-built sabers can get the required precision without Force-assistance, but the accelerated method of hand building definitely requires the Force to have everything aligned properly. (The month-long version may not require as much assistance, I don't recall for sure. I'd double check the book, but I don't have it at the moment.)

Then there is a similarity between lightsabers and Culture style feilds.
My original theory was it had something to do with heat, but after looking a little deeper into the subject, i think it may be more like a knife sharp feld combined with ultra-hot surface.
Thus, you get microthin cuts, as well as cauterizing, and it can all be explained well within the bounds of what we know of Empire shields. Thank you Nomad

Lightsabres don't generate heat. That was said early on on the first page.

You don't get it
Of course, CP and UoW have direct example of fields used as molecular cutting tools.
But here it's different. They built a
REAL lightsabre.
STRAIGHT OUT OF ANH.
LITERALLY.
