The test is supposed to be designed to test one's potential to succeed in college, but it is clearly flawed. For example, male test scores are higher than female scores, even though women do much better in college than men do. They are thinking of changing the test to weight it more on writing ability than reading, and alter the math section to reflect some of these concerns, but everyone taking it today has scores that are subject to some of the test's problems.

I got a 27 on the ACT. I could've done much better, I think, but I was too lazy to take it again. :)

I took the SAT twice, once my freshman year of high school, again as a junior.
First SAT:
1350 -- 750 reading, 600 math.
Second SAT:
1460 -- 800 reading, 660 math.
Rather than take SAT-IIs, I took AP exams my senior year (English, Calculus A (differentials) and B (integrals), U.S. History, Chemistry, Biology, and Physics B (mechanics w/calculus) and C (electromagnetics w/calculus)). Scored mostly 4s and 5s (out of 5) on those, but didn't do very well on the Physics C test and only passed Calculus B with a 3.
I hear that they're adding a mandatory writing section to the SAT and lengthening the other sections to try and make it more relevant this coming spring. I wonder if we're going to see average scores drop again as a result; too many people can't seem to handle what's already there.

Yeah I know. I washed away the pain from the test with a few games of Warcraft 3. Warcraft 3 makes everything better...
But I have a question for you.
On the last section of the test, the writing (more like editing) section, did you get something like 4 B's in a row and then later on something like 5 E's in a row?
That's what everybody here on the west coast had.

i got a 29 on the ACT, 1300 on th SAT (660 verbal, 640 math)
Those were the only reason i got into college. My grades were less than stellar....as were my SAT II's. Althoguh, I did get a 580 on the Biology (M) which I'm rather proud of.

Are we talking about AP Tests now? Those are the ones that let you get out of taking college courses, right?
Here were my scores, I remember most of them pretty well, but I can't remember if my three came in Spanish or German. I only took one of those two, and I can't remember which one.
English Lit: 5
Chemistry: 5 (I thought that one was by far the easiest, even though normally I'm better at English/History. I just remember that my friend told me he made a serious error on every single one of the written problems and he still got a 4.)
Macroeconomics: 4
Microeconomics: 5
US History: 5
Calc 1: 4

We don't have an SAT test in Canada. High schools are assigned a "fudge factor" based on past graduate performance, and high school marks are used as admission criteria along with other items such as extracurricular activities.
Of course, admission is not that important anyway. In my faculty, they admitted a huge first-year class, a third of which made it to second-year. That way, they get one year's tuition out of them without worrying about low-quality graduates tainting the reputation of the program.

Took the PSAT today too, don't know how I'll do, didn't study much and I was having troubles with the reading parts of the verbal sections(which was odd cause usually I do my best with the reading sections on the TAAS[Texas's standerized test needed to graduated high school] Making either a perfect or 1 short of a perfect) And I suck at grammer and shit so my Writting section is ussually low. I took a Practice PSAT my sophomore year and they didn't give us scores but told us what percentages we were out of the other Sophomores who took it, I did better than 98% in reading, 94% in math, and 74% in writting.

IIRC, many schools in the US also check on the performance of high schools. The University of California (and it's many schools) is beginning to discount the SAT for admissions.
I never really did like the concept of it - I knew far too many bright people that simply couldn't do well on those types of standardized tests.

Northwestern University was much the same way. They have a first-year engineering program designed to burn as many people out as possible (I was one of the burn-outs). The University of Minnesota does the same thing (my relatives are mostly engineers and had particularly nasty memories of that).

I don't know if you have a similar problem in Canada, but in America we have lots of grade inflation, so it simply wouldn't do to admit kids based on grades and extracurricular activities alone (since kids can just load up their applications with absolute BS). The standardized test is a good thing.

My brother took the PSAT today. I don't know how well he did. They didn't give you scores though? My high school made us take it Freshman, Sophomore and Junior years and we always got the score reports.
Florida has replaced the old HSCT (biggest joke
ever) with the FCAT, which is a bit harder, but I still don't see how people fail them!

The UC System, as a whole, is not dropping the SAT's importance, AFAIK. I read a story just a few months ago that said that UC SD was actually making the SAT II's more important on determining admittance. In fact, they said that more than half of their admitted students would get in based ONLY on their GPA, SAT, and SAT-II scores.

Yes, one of the biggest mistakes of my life. If you do very well on it (and chances are if you're posting on a Star Wars forum, you'll do very well) you will be called by various branches of the armed services several times a week for the rest of your high school career. Or the recruiting officers might even take the liberty of coming to your house. Early. Uninvited.

Then the Marines are perfect for you!
You don't get the option of disagreeing!
Or at least we will never know about it after they use you for target pratice
