Should Women be drafted?

it would be a good way of getting rid of all the ugly girls though. maybe it should not be allowed for beautiful women to join the army or be drafted but the ugly ones are drafted, not trained and then used as canon fodder in the front rows. the ones who survive are "accidently" taken out by friendly fire.

From many a military stand point women not being in combat has nothing to do with their ability, but their effect on fellow troops. To put it strait to the point if you have three soldiers, two wounden and one of the wounded is a female and the others male, odds are that the healthy soldier is gonna try to protect the female more than the male soldier. Thats how human nature is for the most part.

I never thought of that before. When we think of drafting, we think of sending men to fight in battle. Not sending a certain SD.net denizen's uncle to a warehouse in South Carolina for the entire duration of Vietnam

I do not believe that women should be drafted into branches that do not allow them to serve in combat roles. To do so would be to violate the purpose of the draft, which is to garner more soldiers who physically go out and shoot the enemy. I realize that they might be of great use in non-combat roles, but I also don't see that they should be forced to serve in a branch that excludes them from parts of its ranks. It just doesn't strike me as being equitable, either way.

Well, if there's no need for a draft, I don't think there should be one.

When all the men were out to fight, the women stayed at home and worked in past wars. I guess people think men are more "combatworthy". Women need less calories per day than men, however.

It pretty much does, believe it or not. There are so many exemptions for educated people, and people who have some financial resources behind their names, that the vast majority of the people that get drafted are actually creationists or people whose fervent patriotism inspires them to accept their drafting, even though they can get out of it. Since most of those people are creationists from the Deep South, the majority of those who are drafted are, indeed, creationists.

Of course, the majority of those drafted are also minorities, which is unfortunate.

Oh and Drafting generaly applys to the Army and GI's except over half the combat missions done now-adays are not by GI's but by Marines, Special Opps and the Air Force/Navy

IIRC Australia has women in frontline units now, or atleast in units as frontline as Aussies have been in the past few years (East Timor and other peace-keeping).

And with the government bandying about "conscription" I don't see any barriers to having women recruited.

That depends on what you mean by "military organization." I was responding to a point made by someone who said he was going to join the Intelligence Service in order to escape combat, and I correctly pointed out that the first American killed in combat in Afghanistan was actually a CIA operative. It probably is not a military branch, the way you define it, but that does not change the order of American deaths in Afghanistan, nor does it suddenly make the CIA's job safe.

I think you are partially right... Um women are allowed (I think) to fly Hercs and transport a/c, but not front line fighter stuff.

Its not a Military Branch Period Ossus you missed the Point, You can't be drafted into the CIA is strickly Voluntier Only, Since we are talking about a "Draft" IE going into the MILITARY with no choice, comparing the CIA to Military Intellgence is eronus

Furthermore the dead operative in question had to voluntier not once but three times, first to server in the CIA at all, second to server over-seas and third to server as an officer(IE spy) in a hostile country

Kelly let me put it this way, Politcions are lazy, Sure the draft is not needed, It was not needed for Vietnam however the US is according to Congress anyway supposed to be able to fight one major War plus two minor brush-fires Kosvo sized elsewhere

Sorry, but that's not true. Men are stronger and faster than women, but women are better at survival and at moving over long distances.
