I've always found melee to be too annoying/dangerous, particularly when there is more than one enemy. Giving the enemies a free chance to shoot holes into you with a burst or two because you have to close in to attack... Can you tell that I don't like to load from a saved game often?
If you really want to play melee-only and would rather avoid constant re-loading, find one of the guides which tells you how to get the Mk2 Power Armor almost right in the beginning of the game.

The story of Bitch-Ca....
Yeah, um, started out in thie primitive little town called arroyo. Some old chick told me I needed to go to a temple or something. So I did. She was mumbling something about a Holy 13 or whatever. I wasn't really listening. Anyways, I go into this temple, and there's fucking bugs and spiders and scorpions, and One of them stung me and I started puking all over the place. Fucking sick. OH! And to top it all off, I get THROUGH the temple, poisoned, Tired, cold and hungry,
(Yeah, here's the scoop on that. I've been in here three days already. I got to this second door, and I couldn't get through it. There I sat, pondering, pondering, pondering...for hours and hours and hours, idly tossing into the air some ball I found with a metal squarish thing attached to it. It was the only form of entertainment I had, seeing as how I killed everything else in the place. So there I was, tossing and tossing and tossing. pondering, pondering, pondering. when suddenly The ball beeped! Well, I can tell you I've never owned a singing ball before! I was enchanted! Then it started glowing! Well, common sense dictates that you should not hang on to talking, glowing balls, they may be trying to deliver a message! Or, they may be unhappy being tossed about. So I did what any sane person would do....I threw it on the ground adn prostrated myself before it's glory some 30 feet away.
Apparently the ball didn't like this, as it soon burst into a pillar of FLAME! Well, a couple hours later, when I came to, I found that the door had indeed been blown to bits! Heartened, I strode through.)
Only to meet another of my tribe who said he wanted to fight before he would let me through. No WAY I could beat him in the condition that I was in, So I snatched the key to the door behind him off of his belt, and darted by like a mad Gecko on Jet.
Upon arriving back at the village, I met the old ldy again, who started talking some mumbo-Jumbo about a GECKO...or GECKA or something, about how I had to find it, and save the village, and blah blah blah. Well, I was bored with all this so I decided I would leave the village to seek my fortunes elsewhere. Isn't that how all good adventures start? On my way out of the village, I was stopped by my cousin, who told me his dog, Smoke was missing. GREAT! PERFECT! Fine, I said, I'll help you find your stupid god....dog...whatever...

Bah. That shit just ruins the game. I found out how to get that and the bozar right near the beginning and tried it once, and found that it was a fun vacuum.

Personally i don't like the Bozar. I much prefer the plasma rifle (upgraded) and the Gauss Rifle
And IMO shooting is the way to go! When playing FA2 my tag skills are small guns, thief and doctor/energy weapons. With a high thief skill you can get lots of decent stuff very easily!

Melee is fun, nohting like seeing guys in Adv. Power armour exploding in one hit with the Slayer perk

I usually go for a sniper character (and try to find the Gauss Rifle ASAP)

Gauss or Electric Rifle.
Though the Gauss can be used by Cassidy as well...makes for some nice killing.

If you ask me, speech is the most important skill in the game. I never play Fallouts without investing huge amounts of skill points on it. You can do pretty much anything you want to the people you meet without worrying about consequences, if you are a good talker. This especially applies to FO2.
I think I've finished FO2 about dozen times and every time I've learned new things. Although I find a goodie game where you are nice to everyone the most rewarding way to play FO2, the funniest game was when I playing as a total asshole, who betrayed, murdered, lied, etc.

I've had a few characters like that, always ended up massacreing Vault City. Often they would use the junkies in New Reno as target practice as well. They didn't go around killing people for no reason, though. That's not playing evil, that's just stupid.

My evil character just said "Screw you!" to the whole Vault City business, when those spoiled bastards didn't quite like the way she dealt with the Gecko nuclear reactor. Who needs access to their data anyway?

I totally agree on that, though I guess there are some players who get kicks from it. I preferred fucking a gangster's wife (and daughter), murdering few punks for the mob, stealing money from the New Reno Church, selling my husband (or was it wife?) to the slavers, betraying Marcus the Mutant, and the like.
Edit:
I
so want to play FO and FO2 right now!

I once played a char named "Jade the Bloddy", who's mission was to distroy evil.........through explosives.
Heh heh, BOOM, I killed all of New Reno!

IIRC, the fan patch is an attempt to fix the many, many bugs in FO2. Hopefully it'll eventually be completed.

Try playing a character with the lowest intelligence possible.
It's pretty damned tough. It takes you forever to gain experience because no one will give you jobs that bring in the big Exp. Hell, you can't even use the slot machines because they scare you.
It's pretty damned funny, too. Remember that retarted guy, Tor, you find in the first town in FO2? You have a hugely intelligent conversation with him.

It's left your Hard Drive?!
Given it's relative small size...it'll always occupy a permanent residence on my 'puter.

I've played it about a couple of months ago. And doe to small hard drive space I had to delete it. But I have bought a new one 2 days ago (mainly forced by the failure of the previos one) and there should be more than enough room.

IS THAT WHY I CAN'T USE THE SLOT MACHINE?! GAH! When I look at them it just says I stare at it, it has one arm and three eyes, and is the prettiest thing I've ever seen. buncha horseshit. That tears it! I'm starting over! CRAP CRAP CRAP!
Although....
Oh, the story....
Chardok's log...redux
So, I went to Klamath. Rescued that dumb slave guy. Then I went to that...other....city...where I promptly joined the SLAVER'S GUILD!!! WOOTERS!I thought it would be a good way to get info on the whereabouts of Grampy Bone's sistah or whatever. I went on a slave run. Well, apparently, oogie Boogie didn't like the fact that I was sleeping with the enemy so to speak. He attacked me, so I had to liberate his head with my all-powerful pipe rifle. so, like 4 slave runs later, the pens at Murdock's or whatever are all full up and I spring Vic, using the radio I borrowed from his house (Also where I got the all powerful pipe rifle....TO RULE THEM ALL) h'okay. so me and Vic, we wanders over to this house in whatever city is was we were in...(Who can keep track? Crapville or whatever...The Den or something) anyway, there's this chick, Laura, who wants me to find out what Tyler Durden is guarding in this old church. So I do. Course, I'm feeling like a total badass now, cause on one of my slave runs, I got me a 10mm pistol and a SAWED OFF SHOTGUN, BABY! GIMME SOME SUGAR!
Tyler sees me, recognized my tat, and let me check out the goods. some chems in big boxes, nothing special. So...I go back to this laura chick who isn't surprised by this development, but she SENDS me to murdock or whatever to ask him if she can kick the shit out of Tyler Durden (Not likely, thinks I, that guy kicks the shit out of himself.). Metzger says yeah. So I go BACK to laura collect my measley 50bucks. YEah, she want's me to go find a weakness in Tyler Durden's gang. So I do. They're having a party it seems. Doesn't seem like big news to me, but it's all they're talking about. so I go BACK TO LAURA AGAIN and tell her about this. she's fucking giddy. Okay, I say, gimme cash. Nope. She wants me to kill Tyler's gang with her. NOTHING DOING, I SAY! Pay me my 300 bucks! She says no. So I agree to go with her. well, I'm of course on point for this little raid. so I round the corner by the church and see one guard, who csees me, and he shoots me in the face. It hurt, I won't lie, but I filled him full of lead, and the other three of laura's gang beat him to a bloddy pulp with sledges.
This is the funny part. See I KNOW there's about 5 more guys INSIDE the church, right, but I don't tell laura that. After the guard outside is dead, I call in the 300 bucks, which she coughs up! Then I'm out like last tuesday. Last thing me and vic heard was 10mm JHP bouncing off the church walls and screams of the dying. Not bad for a day's work.
Off to new Reno!!!!
Happened across some claim jumpers last night. Never saw anything like it. One of them had a big-assed gun with linked ammo! Blew Vic into bite-sized chunks. Whoa, I thought. That thing canNOT hit me. So I shot him in the eye. Blinded him. Then I shot both of his buddies in the eyes, and they were all running around, screaming, blinded, and I mowed em all down and god me a nifty new gun to boot! With that, I was off to New Reno.
New Reno is bright....

You can't save Sulik's sister or go to the EPA base -- both of those were dropped from the game.

It's dangerous to be Chardok's party member. Your "friends" keep dropping dead like redshits. Is your character's name James T. Kirk by any change?
