The Lost World was ok but really slow. The Andromeda Strain was just slow. Sphere and Eaters of the Dead are good but not really kids books.

The more I think about it, the more I'm inclined towards Heinlein's juvenile novels. They're the sci-fi equivalent of The Hobbit, thoughtful and well written with out going over and under kid's heads.

I've heard of Heinlein...but not much about him. NOr have I read any of his work.

I wouldn't suggest letting children read Stranger in A Strange Land, Friday, or some of his more "racy" works.

Hobbit is not as complex as LOTR but still really difficult for young kids unless they are already advanced readers.

When I was a kid my Aunt bought me a subscription to National Geographic. I think that is a good one. If the articles are too complex, they still can read the graphs and captions under the printers.

And you know, I still vaugely remember books about the little choo choo and a little tug boat. Getting them started early is key, even if you have to read to them.

Those are his adult works, of course I wouldn't let a kid read those till they got a little older. I'd stick to his juvenile novels.

I agree with you on that. That's why we had them a juvenile book; to suit their maturity level.

I just suddenly had a bad thought of RayCav loose in Kelly's new fic.

You know, it occurs to me that it's a good thing that my parents never tried taking a look at what I was reading...

As long as you were mature enough to handle its, it's no big deal. Of course most parents wouldn't see it that way.

If you were a parent (Or are a parent), What would you do to get your kids hooked on Books. - The Yosemite Bear

Easy. Read to them. I've been reading to my son even when he was in the womb. As well, just plain reading can be boring. Look, point, and explain the pictures. You know, this is a tree. It's a big, green tree. I also use flash cards. As well, I don't force him to read. Sometimes I'll pick up one of his books and start reading. Soon, he'll come over and wonder what I'm doing. I try to vary my approach as much as possible. As well, my wife fully participates in our son's educational development. It's much easier when both parents are involved and care.

For older kids, I'd recommend finding out about what interests them and then go from there. If a kid likes cars, then give him a book on cars. Mabye a story abou cars. Famous people and cars. If a school has some kind of program that promotes reading, then that would be helpful. As well, the books should match the reading proficiency level of the child.

My parents got me reading just by reading to me. A lot. As a result I was starting to read when I was three. Of course at the time it was comic books, but it was still reading. Which might be a good idea... maybe comic books would be a good way to get them started?

Comic books or Manga though that leads me to funny story about a six year old I know who derives his moral code from Vash the Stampeded
