It wasn't just the ham radio community -- stuff like military transmissions were beginning to be affected, and the US grid is ancient.

Not to big, but they are lead by Art Bell (one of the biggest commercial talk radio figures) in this and so they will be persistent...

If there is money to be made then there's nothing a small vocal group can do about it.

Uhm... Art Bell has millions apon millions of fanatical followers... they aren't that small....

No, they're lead by the ARRL (American Radio Relay League), which was started way back around Marconi's time. Well, maybe not exactly, but you get the idea.

Art Bell is a notable figure however, and yes, he's a ham. (My dad has actually talked to him on the air... although he doesn't anymore because of the guy's eccentricities.)
