Trust me, you need at least a gig of RAM. In one scene I did I couldn't even render because I needed more RAM. RAM is the most important thing you can get, more so then a video card. i´m not so sure about that gig of ram. i´ve got 128 in my old 800MHz Athlon and it´s actually doing almost fine. it starts getting shaky when i use a lot of paricle systems, too many light sources or raytrayce materials, but in general it´s all right. at least for modelling.
