He really changed the way music was composed and performed. He broke away from Beethoven's structure and made an entirely new one which is the basis for virtually all orchestrations today.
i can see that--i guess i just don't personally care for liszt much (sorry). i had to play too much of his stuff that was written just to show off how awesome he was, and it sort of turned me off to him. lots of fluff and not enough substance. but i can see how you could feel that way about him. he knew his shit.
oh! one more contribution! hector berlioz! totally taught himself how to compose, came up with that whole col legno thing, and wrote one of the coolest pieces ("symphonie fantastique") ever. got in lots of trouble for putting the sacred 'dies irae' in a secular piece--was the first to mix the two. he rocks.

Because
she's a total genius.
She's done the following:
Cowboy Bebop
Turn-A Gundam
Macross Plus
Escaflowne
Brain Powerd
She seems to be able to do virtually any genre; be it jazz or orchistration.
I really can't describe how she is. She's just that good.
And she did the end theme for Jin_Roh. That is one of the saddest songs EVER considering the ending.

ok, it's been a few years since i was a piano major (switched to percussion--but that's a longish story so i'll spare you)--i did 'hungarian rhapsody #2', 'les jeux' (can't remember the full title--piece is hard as hell), and 4 or 5 others (if you really want to know, i'm sure i can find my assignment book from freshman/sophomore year). but no, i did not play mephisto. i am downloading it now, because i am curious. i didn't mean to offend you by calling his music fluff--but to me, compared to beethoven--!!! ahh. there is a huge difference. and i'm not talking about the mainstream stuff, either. like 'string quartet no. 14, opus 131'--ahh, le sigh... heart-wrenchingly gorgeous. que bella.
OH! just remembered one liszt i liked. 'nuages gris'--not at all like the other stuff i played by him. beautifully simple. loved it. do you know it?

Bach, Holst, Dvorak, Grieg....Bach was period the greatest composer that ever lived. Holst wrote the Planets--that's explanation enough. Dvorak and Grieg always used new forms in their music, always incorporating different styles and methods. They all write truly beautiful music.

IMO, out of all his works that I have listened to so far, his best are Les Preludes, Liebestraum, Mephisto Waltz, Hungarian Rhapsody #2, and Hungarian Rhapsody #11. I've tried dlling #11, but I can't find it anywhere. The only times I've heard it were at a piano recital when my piano teacher played it.

i do indeed still play, although i suck hardcore now compared to what i used to be able to do. but don't get me wrong, i could NEVER do the flashy liszt stuff the way it was intended--i was never good enough.
there are some pieces that i am going to try to find in sheet music soon (like gershwin's 'lullaby,' orig. piano solo version), so i can see if i can find #11 and if it's not too much (i'm still in the 'poor university student' mode) i can get it along with my gershwin.... i liked #2, if i can remember that long ago......
ok, i can't be the only one, can i? does anyone else here play?

I don't play, I just listen.
Fortunately there are good symphonies close to where I live.

I'll second that 100%. I'd also say Jerry Goldsmith. I love his use of Classic symphony and Syth sounds.

Actually I haven't learned a single Liszt piece.

I guess my teacher doesn't think I'm good enough. lol I have a book of his music that someone got me for a present, but I never really looked at it because I'm very busy learning new pieces my teacher gives me. I play Chopin, Beethoven, Mozart, Cramer, Bach, still learning Brahms, still learning Rachmaninoff, Schumann, and...well can't think of other composers I've played before as of now. Oh yeah, and Williams. (Imperial March and Main Title)

The most difficult piece I can play is the Revolutionary Etude. I'm almost done learning it, but I still have to get the tempo up after I finish learning the fingering.

????????????!!!!!!!! lol

cute.
remember that piece i told you about--'nuages gris?' it's like less than 50 measures or something and pretty easy to play, if you want to try it. now, it doens't sound anything like his more popular pieces, but i like it (not that that means anything to you, since you don't know me from eve, but...yeah). it's kind of eerily creepy, and at the end there's a quote from wagner, which is cool... could be a good first piece to do of his...maybe...?

Quote from Wagner, eh? Or perhaps it was Wagner's quote from Liszt, considering his entire "ring" was based on Liszt's innovations?

And yes, I think I'll try learning that. But could you give me the No. and Op. please? It'll make it easier for me to download. I tried looking for it but did not find anything at all.

try looking under 'eyes wide shut'--it was used in the movie (it's also sometimes listed as 'grey clouds' instead of 'nuages gris'). and i can't find an opus number or anything for it--it's not part of a larger collection. it's just it's own little piece.
