Long ago, Carmack said something along the lines of a 1ghz chip, 256mb ram, geforce or higher. Some details follow which may have come from the Doom3 review issue of PCGamer:

Low-End:
1.5Ghz P4 or equivalent
512MB Ram
Geforce4 Ti 4800 or Radeon 9500

Mid-Range:
2.4Ghz P4 or equivalent
512MB RAM
Geforce5950 or Radeon 9800 Pro/XT

High-End:
3.4Ghz P4 or equivalent
1GB RAM
GeForce 6800 Ultra or Radeon X800 XT PE

You can find the above info at [H]ardforums, nvnews, etc.

Know that the high-end machine is not recommended for the highest detail settings. Save up for that 512 meg card

So when's the demo out? Or do they consider the alpha leak a demo? :P

Many years ago, blank CD-Rs had a golden appearence. Going gold meant that the final build has been burned on said CD-R and sent off to manufacturing.
I wonder if gold CD's are made anymore, I feel nostalgic for the gold ole days.

No you're not! A 1.2Ghz Athlon is roughly the equivalent of a 1.7Ghz P4! (Assuming they're talking about the Willamette model; they probably are, since the slowest Northwood was 1.6GHz)

Uhh, wouldn't a 1.2GHz Athlon be a T-bird and not an Athlon XP chip?

Yes, but they're usually about $1 each.

I heard over at SA that Doom3 will ship with an "Ultra Mode" that will require a 512mb vid card.

I suspect that we might be seeing this engine in various incarnations for a very long time.

Yeah, I read that about the video card on another site. Nothing confirmed, but damn.

The T-Birds still trashed the P4, clock-for-clock, though not quite as much as the AXP. IIRC the T-Bird is about 1.3 times faster than the Willamette, with the AXP being 1.5 times faster.

You should be able to get an R9600 Pro for around that price range.

9600XT could fit that price range too or dish out a little extra for a 9800 Pro.

At last! I have both Doom 3 and Half Life 2 on pre-order with Amazon, last time I checked Doom would be delivered on August 16th, Half-Life 2 in early September. I wonder how many D3 vs HL2 threads will emerge in the coming months?

I preferred the times when demos came out before games. :P
