A campaign ad for George W. Bush, no less. Which means the Bush campaign bought time during the Olympics to show a campaign ad. That's beyond fucking slimy.

Here's a spoon, Bush Campaign, now eat my ass.
Was this during an actual ad break?

Or did they make one just for that?

Does it matter? It's the fucking Olympics. Bringing politics into the Olympic games is intensely distasteful.

Yeah. Even I was pissed off at that one.

I think the ceremony was surprisingly cool, though. I even liked the normally stupid theatrical act that kicks off the main events.

Did anyone else get a replay of the 2000 opening ceremony beforehand?

Or was that just us in Australia?

Oh yes, more stuff on the Iranian athlete.
ATHENS, 13 August - On the day of his proudest moment when he carried his country's flag at the Opening of the Athens Olympic Games, Iranian double world champion Arash MIRESMAEILI withdrew from the Olympic Competition on Friday.

The judo draw on Thursday evening put MIRESMAEILI into his first bout against Israel's judoka Ahud VAKS in the under 66 kilogram competition.

Iranian team officials said MIRESMAEILI did not want to fight in a competition against Israeli fighters as he sympathised with the Palestinian cause.

The Iranian sources have confirmed that the major favourite for the Olympic title under 66 kilograms will not even compete for the repechage with a chance for a bronze medal.

In the past, other Iranian judokas have declined to fight against Israeli athletes.

At the Judo World Championships in 2001, Mahed MALEKMOHAMMADI of Iran didn't want to fight Yoel RAZVOZOV of Israel.

In 2001 Masoud HAJI AKHOUNDZADE (IRI), at that time Asian Champion, didn't fight Israels lightweight Zvi SHAFRAN.

Yup, the Olympic games definitely bring out the spirit of peace and cooperation in all people.

Didn't surprise me...
After all, Bush gave a little speech of his own in the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in 2002 where he wasn't supposed to...

So shouldn't he be looking forward to kicking an Israeli fighter's ass?

On NBC, they said it was because he didn't recognize Israel's right to exist as a nation.

I think that's stupid: I don't recognize Israel's right to exist as a non-secular nation, either, but that's not what the Olympics are all about. This guy's just being a douche.
And anyways, since when are only legit nations allowed in? There are all kinds of British and American territories and dependencies competing.
And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'

You win on knock-out. It's rare, however, for a boxer to be KO'ed in Olympic competition, since there are only four rounds.

That speach sickened me. Especialy when they crossed LIVE to frigen Adghanistan with the troops there shouting 'USA USA! USA!"

What in the name of GOD? That kind of political BS has no God damn place in the Olympics! After I saw that I just switched off the TV.

Well I didn't switch it off so much as channel flip :) But the point remains.

The Olympics are on?

Could have fooled me, and I read the paper everyday and watch and surf for news alot. :P

Coverage is low here. Honestly, I didn't even know about the opening ceremony and really didn't care. The Olympics have crossed over to the realm of the Academy Awards, as far as I'm concernd. Corrupt at the bone and not worth the money nor the time spent on them.

Disclaimer; my opinon and not meant to reflect the opinon of anyone else. :P
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong

But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

The Olympics are a hopelessly corrupt clusterfuck full of who-cares atheletes from obscure countries playing sports that nobody gives a shit about.

"This just in, Shitfuckistan's victory in the septathalon has been overturned after the bribe check bounced and the officials remembered the entire team was dosed up on steroids and PCP. For those who don't recall, the septathalon involves consecutively biking, running, swimming, eating ten pounds of fried chicken, rolling down a hill in a tire, kickboxing, jogging, gymnastics, and synchronized buggery."

But how dare someone besmirch such a sacred event with politics.

Fuck the Olympics. They're horseshit, and all these atheletes will be slapped on a Wheaties box and then be back to sweeping floors for a living a month later, when everyone realizes the football game is on, and they don't actually give a shit about track and field.
If Religion and Politics were characters on a soap opera, Religion would be the one that goes insane with jealousy over Politics' intimate relationship with Reality, and secretly murder Politics in the night, skin the corpse, and run around its apartment wearing the skin like a cape shouting "My votes now! All votes for me! Wheeee!" -- Lagmonster

Funny how the opening ceromony was watched by over four BILLION PEOPLE. Wonderful how apparently no-one cares about the Olypmics.

I respect them for their abilities and the fact that so many people WATCH the Olympics, not just the opening ceromony indicates more then a few people don't agree with your opinion. Oh so someone can run the 100 meters in X seconds. I don't see this as being any more or less impressive then any OTHER athelte in any OTHER sport.

Four billion!?

Are there even that many TV's in the world?

Given that China is roughly in the same timezone as Australia, much of China would be asleep. There's 6 billion people in the world, China has some 1.5. This doesn't quite add up.

While I agree that it's impressive, and I will be watching much more of the Olympics than the OC, I also find NFL games to be more exciting than men's gymnastics tournaments.

It depends on the sport.
For instance, the swimming stadion is packed, epecially when there are finals.
