I can remember nearly every piece of music I've played. It's the ones I never played or only played once or twice taht I can't remember. Playing bass clarinet takes a good ear. You play with EVERYONE in the band at any given point in a piece. If you're playing with the trombones and they're all sharp, you have to adjust your pitch to match theirs. So, I know every little detail in pieces I've played.Larz wrote:Its always hard to remember music after a time. I figured as much, but I was hoping maybe you had tucked away in a dusty box somewhere... I wish you hadn't been screwed by politics. Beaurocracy. Ugh. Anyways, IIRC, you don't have to have a degree to be a private tutor. If not a director, then the next best thing!Zaia wrote:I figured as much, but I was hoping maybe you had tucked away in a dusty box somewhere... I wish you hadn't been screwed by politics. Exactly. Trombones are REALLY loud...thank god you're not as obnoxious as some trumpets....IG-88E wrote:No one I know who plays t-bone has ever had that problem. Besides, being in a symphony, violas (like myself) half to tune up with the trombones more often than not, and it can be really hard when someone's sharp and sopmeone's not and you dunno which one's right.

I know how that goes. I used to play French Horn in band, I was the only one too so I always got first position. If I wasn't tuned with the rest of the band, then my sound stuck out like a sore thumb.Kelly Antilles wrote:I can remember nearly every piece of music I've played. Thing is, 'bones have it easiest to get in tune with everyone else, just adjust your position up or down slightly.IG-88E wrote:No one I know who plays t-bone has ever had that problem. IME, trumpet players are more arrogant tham most musicians becuase so many pieces feature them.verilon wrote: Exactly. Trombones are REALLY loud...thank god you're not as obnoxious as some trumpets....
That's what handheld tuners are for.Besides, being in a symphony, violas (like myself) half to tune up with the trombones more often than not, and it can be really hard when someone's sharp and sopmeone's not and you dunno which one's right.

lol, you have yet to come here. The ditzy ones are (of course) the flute players and First Violins. In other words, the snobs.IG-88E wrote:Ugh. I think it's more that they are almost always heard, above everyone else in any ensemble, and if they crack their notes they suck and if they nail them, they're awesome. There's no middle ground. I unfortunately have this bizarre sixth sense when it comes to trumpet players--I can actually detect them, even out of a crowed of strangers (I did this on a bus boy at a restaurant sucessfully). I am drawn to them, even though their egos drive me bonkers... Their opinions on themselves are extremely bipolar; either maddeningly egotistical or severely depressed. I've mostly kicked the habit, though. *phew* Free at last, free at last...IG-88E wrote:IME, trumpet players are more arrogant tham most musicians becuase so many pieces feature them.

Wow.....and I dislike trumpeteers SEVERELY. THere are two that I can remember that were actually cool, but they converted to viola-ism.Zaia wrote:I think it's more that they are almost always heard, above everyone else in any ensemble, and if they crack their notes they suck and if they nail them, they're awesome. Stupid Trumpet or T-bone, no one remembers the French Horn, NOBODY! But I play the guitar now so I rule over all.

I have a freeware programme that allows me to make my own MIDIs.
But I'm not much of a musical person, so it's not very usefull. But it is pretty cool to screw around with.

But how many French Horn solos have you heared?... its a very methodical insturment, can be gentle as a pan flute and blarring torrent as the baritone all based on the player... the strength of the lips and how one uses the hand in the bell (we don't put our hands in the bell for decoration) can produces great sounds from it.

Several. Called it ABQ Youth Symphony. And the Fr. Horn is one of the solo instruments. The other two are viola and oboe. I have my reasons.Larz wrote:But how many French Horn solos have you heared?... its a very methodical insturment, can be gentle as a pan flute and blarring torrent as the baritone all based on the player... the strength of the lips and how one uses the hand in the bell (we don't put our hands in the bell for decoration) can produces great sounds from it.

Mozart's 4 Horn concertos are my favorite. Especially when played by a really good horn player. And I always hear the FH. I sit right beside them.Larz wrote:Hmm, well, till saturday night I've never really heard French Horn Solo (I went to the new touring show Blast!), but its still a far and few solo

I never understood why the French Horns were always placed next to the Bassoons and Oboes... wierd...
