There is also the human tendancy to not *wish* to remember extremely bad events in history.

For example, how many people recalled that there was a prior attack on the Twin Towers? A carbomb in the parking lot.

It's also a scale of the Holocaust. Stalin very accurately made a statement on the human psyche in that regard "One death is a tragedy, a million deaths is a statistic". People can't wrap their brains around that many deaths, not in a real sense, and it only hits them when they hear of a single tragedy, like Anne Frank, or someone.
