I can look at a baseball game and think it's boring and dull. Obviously, because I don't understand it. I can look at America Footbal and find it barbarically stupid. Because I've never been interested in it.
So, I don't have the right to trash those sports

True, but on the other hand it has a very silly name.

Soccer is second only to hockey in excitement, and arguably higher than all other sports in terms of strategy and tactics. I think it is probably one of the three best sports ever invented.

How in the world does soccer have any strategy? You have seen actual soccer matches right? Its a tactical game, no more than basketball is a stragic game, tho basketball is more stratgic than soccer. Lets face it, strategy has no place in soccer.

I can't think of anything that would count as strategic in soccer. There is a reason its loved all over the world, its a very simple, easy to understand game. Nothing like football, where you have stategy and tactics to a very high degree. chess is to tic tac toe as football is to soccer.

As Brazilian I can assure that soccer is a sport and like many things: with a lot of importance but no relevance.
Here in Brazil soccer is more important to the culture than even Religion or military stories.

The problem with soccer is the pacing. There is no sudden shock to the system.

In football, you can have that bullet pass to a receiver running a crossing pattern who breaks past the defenders and streaks down the field for a touchdown. Like a bolt out of the blue, 7 points on the board. When it happens, it's simply stunning.

In baseball, you have the home run. Without exception, it always gets a rise out of the crowd (mind you, I don't think it makes up for the excruciating boredom that comes from watching a pitcher scratch his nuts and step off the mound 18 times before throwing each goddamned pitch, so I don't watch baseball).

But in soccer, you can see a score coming from a mile away. It seems to take forever for players to run from one side of the pitch to another, because the pitch is so damned big. There's no way to surprise the other team with a lightning strike.

I think the solution is more speed, less room to maneuver, and a looser policy on physical contact penalties. Ideally, make the pitch much, much smaller. Mind you, this will increase out-of-bounds shots, so you should erect a short wall to contain the ball, so that it bounces off, stays in play, and keeps the action going. Then, speed up all the players, perhaps by giving them skates and an ice surface to play on. Finally, add body armour so that they can take bone-crushing hits without having to cry to Mommy like soccer players do. Wait a minute, the resulting sport sounds kind of familiar ...

Sounds like you'd like indoor soccer. I don't know if it's around anymore but when I was in High School it was pretty cool.

Soccer is extremely boring to watch, beyond seeing the riots via the BBC. However I do enjoy playing it more then any other sport, it also gives you a lot more exercises and requires far more endurance.

Added physical contact won't fly, it would be far to easy end up crippling people.

You can see something coming from a mile away, but it rarely turns into a goal. That's where the edge-of-your-seat tension comes from.

Most of soccer is breif moments of dissapointment, with a few glorious moments of triumph. It's a sport that makes you suffer.

It's still around. BSkyB were re-running a five-a-side tornement with vet players during the World Cup.

Soccer (football) is just as exciting to watch as American Football, and probably more exciting to watch than baseball (more action, even if the scores are lower).

I'd rather play Soccor than watch. But I would far prefer to play Rugby. Almost continous play, lots of hitting, people are sent out mainly for blood injuries, and there is throwing of players and raking . For those of you who are unfamiliar with Rugby let me go through a quick rundown. Two teams, there are several ways to start. Throw ins (duh), toss ups (each team lifts and practically throws a player to knock a ball thrown high in the air), and scuttles (not sure about techincal term but each team makes a circle and trys to kick out a ball). Players can only pass to the side or forward, never back. Only protective wear is a usually a leather cap, cleats, and shin guards (and cups for those who aren't risk takers). Tackling is for stoping my pulling down, ripping down, or smashing into the ground. Oh, and raking, if a player is on a ball and trying to get it out but is gaurding it with their body, a member of the oposite team can drag their cleats of their back in order to get them off the ball! Points are scored by field goals or touchdowns. Its a wonderful sport to play!

Leaving aside my personal grumble that a sport where the ball is carried for most of the time is called 'foot' ball, I have to disagree about the pace. Entire football matches can hinge on one quick break or through-ball. The Leeds-Arsenal game on Saturday had some devastating counter-attacking play from Arsenal- they sprang passes forward quickly and with accuracy, to quick forwards, who murdered the Leeds defence and scored.

Personly I'm neutral when it comes to soccar/football and for that matter most sports, but at the same time whenever I get the chance you'll find me cheering on the Sumo wrestler of my choice.

American football has no more strategy than Soccer does. The only thing strategic about American football is researching your opponent and trying to practice your plays to take advantage of your strengths and their weaknesses... something that a soccer team can do as well. Once the game starts, though, strategy gives way to tactics... and again, both rely heavily on tactics.

I prefer rollerball....the original game, not the new one.

My brother plays indoor soccer. It's much faster paced than outdoor. Fun to watch too, as long as you don't get hit.

Soccer's the only sport I'll willingly watch outside the Olympics. It's probably the only game that people all over the world know (except the US, though maybe now that we have a team that doesn't suck...)
