Still, his personality wouldnt b e the same if his memory wiped... and I dont think anyone would program a willful personality into a droid intentionally
Droids have two types of memory. One (lets call it ROM) contains the basic personality programming, and the other (call it RAM) holds all informational data that the droid has gained throughout its activation time. The RAM holds no crucial data in the identity of the droid, so having the RAM wiped would not effect the personality/identity which is stored as ROM.

It's generally accepted the 3P0 gets his memory wiped in Epi. III and R2 is up for grabs. 3P0's personality is the same inthe OT as it is in the PT, clearly his memory wipe had negligible effects on his personality.

This raises another interesting question.

R2-D2 has been in the ending scene of every single SW movie so far. Think he'll be there for this one?

Yup, he's there, behind the collection of dignitaries and Boss Nass getting the Beach Ball of Peace from Queen Amidala. You can see him there.

I never noticed this. He's the only one then isn't he? Or was Goldenrod in all of them too?

But damnit it makes sense now. Remember in the (I think ANH) commentaries Lucas mentions how the inclusion of the droids was an idea he borrowed from a Japanese film? Basically, it goes like this: there's big important things happenening (like Galactic Civil's Wars) but you focus on the lowest of the low, peasants and follow them throughout the story.

Expect them in ROTS. I'm almost certain Lucas is aware of this.

I believe that was, indeed, his intent all along. Many years ago I ran across some information where he said that the droids were the things that tied every movie togehter. Those two and the Sith (Palpatine and Anakin/Vader, in their various forms) are the only characters that arc the entire six-part series.

It is, I believe, a classic Japanese style and one the Akira Kurosawa relied on.
