Yeah L5R was fun, but my dislike of the system is deeper than just that roll+keep thing. The whole special ability thing is just shot to hell. I mean the game is about heroic samurai and yaddayaddayaa, but then they try to insert realism into the mix... which is like.. what? The clan techniques are out of balance and subject to min maxing. Add the WoD effect of "every following supplement has to include MORE uber special abilities" things look bad.

The backdrop is fun, adventuring in it is fun. The game mechanics aren't fun.
A lot of it can be covered by a good GM, but it gets tiresome if the GM has to be rules judge every fucking second.

Now I'm done complaining.

I go to hit the crab..... What do you mean I missed? Heavy Armor good thing he willl have peanalties for that. What do you mean they dont suffer heavy armor penalties? Tetsubos ignore armor? Oh shit..... squish.

That tends to be what they are...big giant hulking brutes who are hard to damage and deal out lots of it themselves. But you're right, they can get ridiculous fast, especially with minimaxing.

In most combats I've been in, you get only one shot, two if you're lucky before Mr. Crab breaks your ass...so the best way to deal with him (whether its' from a player's or GM's POV) is to take the crab out of his shell;ie.- a court situation or even just leaving Crab lands will humble any Hida real quick.

My 5 foot nothing akodo samurai-ko deathseeker doesn't worry about Hida Bushi's...

Because in order to get in range they have to get past her Naginata, which has been known to take out re-animated samurai in a single hit.
